Italians bought more bicycles than cars in 2011 for the first time in decades, according to local media reports.

Last year some 1.75 million bicycles were sold, about 2,000 more than the number of new cars registered, La Repubblica newspaper reported.

It attributed the change to a slump in car sales during the economic crisis and the rising price of petrol, as well as bikes coming back into fashion.

new for new only though. The 2nd hand market for cars would be far far bigger I'd wager...

It makes sense to ride bicycle in Italy because everything is so close to each other. maybe ferrari should make a bicycle as well

Turin - naples, 870km, that's the same as Dublin to Liege!

I purchased just that in Ireland less than 2 years ago, albeit somewhere between 5 and 25 euros sub 1300. The problem with a 105 speced Bianchi is you have to put up with all manor of espresso swigging euros complaining that its not 'campag'.

Bike usage varies a lot from place to place, its very common in flat cities like Bologna, Pisa, Padova. Not very common in hilltop towns in Tuscany, or hilly cities like Perugia. Not too common in Rome either, the hills are hardly that bad so its probably because the trafic is fairly heavy. The only place I've seen a bike rack outside a church for mass goes is Este in Venito. Not too many bike in Venice either, come to think of it.
