    Britain’s rail system could be plunged into chaos after ministers cancelled the awarding of one of the UK’s biggest rail franchises and put a halt on three more.

    Transport secretary Patrick McLoughlin reversed a decision to strip Virgin of the right to run the West Coast mainline and award it to rival First Group, after he found “unacceptable mistakes” in the bidding process.

    The awarding of a further three rail franchises, including the lucrative Great Western franchise, over the next 12 months hav also been put on hold while a review is carried out. ...

    No games. Just a poorly run procurement process. Heads should roll for this though no doubt the politicians will walk away blameless.

    From experience, and having been on the end of a similarly contested award, though minute in monetary terms compared to this, one certainty about procurement (for all I hate it) is that a tender process needs to be 100% transparent. The slightest hint of something even mildly odourous, and you will have problems. On this ocassion, it's going to coast (sic) a huge sum to get rid of the smell.

    Some uncertainty as to whether the franchise will be given to Virgin to run from the expiry date until its re-awarded or to DOR who already operate East Coast. Could be even more court cases over that...
