Is this possible if you meet the entry requirements or do you have to go back through the CAO. Is there any internal ucd procedure to switch course.

    Thanks.

Yeah its possible as long as you meet the requirements :) Have a chat with the education officer about it. You might have to wait until next semester to move though :)

I am going to finish out the year because I have two electives available to me in semester 2 which I will use to get a taster of the course I want to switch to. So I can be 100% sure of the switch.

What's the course you're considering, and the one you're considering?

Internal transfers are only doable between different but related programmes. If you want to transfer to first year of a different program but unrelated programme, it's done through the CAO.

I am doing Engineering at the moment and thinking of switching to Medicine. I know that I would have to do the HPAT.
The two courses are similar in the first year, as its mostly sciences that are covered in each.

The School of Medicine and Medical Science in University College Dublin will normally consider transfer students to the Medicine degree programme only on humanitarian grounds on a case by case basis. Applications should be accompanied by an endorsement from the applicant’s current Dean and, if claiming medical grounds, a Medical Certificate.

From the site I linked. Cliffnotes version is: Not gonna happen. Medicine being as popular as it is, they're not a fan of people taking what they view as backdoor entrances.

If you want to change, you'll need to reapply through the CAO, start first year next september, and pay full fees for the first year (€8,858)

Edit: Also, the courses probably aren't similar enough given that Engineering has no biology or bichemistry. You need 50 appropriate credits to go into second year of a different course. Plus as mentioned, med says no.

Thats for the advice. Appreciate it.

With regards to you saying I might not be able to go into stage 2 due to no biology or biochem in engineering 1st year. I am planning to use my two electives in Semester 2 to do things just like that, so I can get a taste of the course so I know if I will be making the right decision changing.

I dont see how what I am asking about doing is a backdoor entrance since I still have to meet the entrance requirements that the front door requires?

The 2 electives are irrelevant, they aren't 50 credits they are 10. Since you say you meet the requirements I'm going to assume you've sat the Hpat, the combination of your Leaving + Hpat satisfying the required points. The case still remains that you must reapply through the CAO and begin September 1st next year, paying the full fees as you wont count under the free fees scheme. The courses aren't similar, hence it's not possible to interchange between the 2. To show the difference in the two, I've linked the first year curriculum of both. Unfortunately CAO is only option in this case.

Thanks, I was just enquiring if it was necessary to go through the CAO again, which I now see that it is.

Thanks for the advice and info.

Can I make a suggestion that you go and speak to some people in medicine first? Engineering and Medicine are worlds apart really. BioMed Engineering is in huge demand and a good few of my friends are doing that. It has a strong medical grounding in the later years. Work load both courses are about the same, Medicine having far more reading.

Any particular reason you chose Eng and now want to switch to Medicine?

Your first port of call is your programme office. Not the SU, not anyone else, go to your programme office. They know exactly what you can and cannot do.

I started this thread because I was having some doubts about my course (which I am sure everyone has at some point) and since I want to do Biomed Engineering, I was looking at medicine. I was not 100% wanting to switch, I was just looking at my options, if in a few weeks time I still am having doubts.

But after thinking over it for a week, my doubts are gone. I still want to do Engineering and I am glad I chose it.

I am sure something similar has gone across every 1st year's mind.
