First real cycle home from work in the lashings of rain and had all the raingear so no problem there

Only problem was eyes ran like a tap..On the way home saw a cyclist with clear glasses said he got them online but bit expensive. I don't wear glasses but arrived in work with tears rolling down like I just watched Arsenal concede a goal:rolleyes:

I have sunglasses that are ok in the sun but is there anything to wear in the rain also a hat to cover ears that a helmet would fit over

    Thanks

I tend not to wear glasses in the rain at night as the drops on the glasses make it impossible to see out.

I use a thin headband under the helmet to keep my ears warm but not yet...

A peaked cap is useful for keeping the rain out.

edit: also for when it's wet, and the guy you're drafting has no mudguard.

+1 on the peaked cap. I don't always wear a helmet but a simple baseball cap is great for keeping sun and rain out of my eyes.

I tried clear or yellow tinted lenses for a while but found that the rain would bead on the lens and reduce visibility. YMMV of course.

I wear sunglasses most of the time on the bike but would remove them in heavy rain. I don't understand what you mean. It's not as if the rain is going to make you blind!

Eyes seem to be sensitive to the wind and they run easily. Looks like I was crying like a baby when I arrived in work. Maybe I should re phrase my first post as it seems to be more to do with the wind than the rain. Had glasses in the rain but get steamed up and drops over them so as useful as a fish on a bicycle:)

Hat with peak seems a good idea but I always wear a helmet so looking at options

I think the lads mean a peaked cap under the helmet. (I can't do it myself as, even on the coldest days, a cap makes me hot and itchy).

Sorry that's what I meant just looking for where users got their peaked caps to wear under helmet

NO! NO! NO! NO! NO! You cannot wear a baseball cap on the bike. In fact, you shouldn't be wearing a baseball cap anywhere if you can help it. Hideous garment.

OP, get a proper cycling cap to keep the weather out of your eyes. Most places that sell general cycling gear sell caps as well.

Totally agree, absolutely awful item of attire and should be taxed heavily if worn outside the diamond.

EDIT: Come to think of it ,it's even gross within the game. "shudders"

just look for the ones wih multiple lenses, they usually have a clear set (i cycled in with orange lenses this morning, bangs up the contrast as do yellow)

Op I am the same as you. Cold air at speed makes my eyes water. Keep an eye out for lidl or aldi selling glasses with interchangable lenses. Or a nice pair of safety glasses from a DIY shop will do for commuting.

Well done on commuting, sounds like you enjoyed it.

    Edit

Also... Lidl last year about now were selling ski glasses which were designed like goggles with sealing foam stopping air getting into your eyes. These are only good when really cold or stormy because they are vented but can be quite warm on slow climbs (when they are not needed anyway). They were only a few euro, I bought two sets and find them great. No clear lens though so not great if on dark roads unless you have invested in power lights.

Yep, considerably cheaper than most of the UK suppliers (CRC, Wiggle etc..) on many items, but for small orders the free shipping on CRC can make the difference. http://www.bike-discount.de/ are also worth a look as they can often be even cheaper than Bike24 and their shipping is less on large items. For any reasonably sized orders, you're best advised to shop around and to the final tot up of the shipped cost. The differences are shocking, e.g. new tacx fortius on bike-discount is €649, exact same model but refurbished rather than new is €1217 on CRC.

Edit: FWIW, I ordered some stuff of Bike24 on Monday, and it's just turned up now!

Don't think he meant a baseball hat.peak cap as in a cycling cap- big difference , smaller peak and a lot lighter and easily worn with a helmet :)

i Wear prescription glasses when cycling, so protects my eyes from most crud. However, any of these http://www.amazon.co.uk/s/ref=nb_sb_noss?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=bolle+safety+gasses
would be a low costs solution for day-to-day commuting

I did wear clear lenses for a while (dhb triple lens glasses) but as cdaly_ says I found trying to cycle in the rain at night was like trying to drive without window wipers, and I spent the entire time peering over the rim of the glasses anyway.

Kinda just got used to it. On the rare occassion that I get caught in absolute pissing rain with high winds, I just drop the speed and tilt my head slightly forward so the front of the helmet catches it. Now if I'm wearing glasses when it starts raining, I remove them altogether.

I think if you tough it out your eyes will just desensitise to it. When I rode a motorbike my eyes initially would water at any speed, but after a couple of weeks I could ride at 100km/h with the visor up and no problems with vision.

For covering your ears, a skull cap will do just fine, €15-€20, doesn't need to be fancy just has to cover your ears. My cheapo one kept them snug in the stupid temps during winter 2010.

I use a good pair of UVEX wraparound safety glasses - snagged them in work. Something similar from a DIY shop or builder's suppliers could be a low cost solution.

+1 on the cycling caps, theyre brilliant!
    and stylin' too

Ludicerous responses!!! Baseball caps are the height of style. Why, I've seen combine harvester drivers and pick-up truck drivers wear them and...
No, I don't think I can make this one fly. They look hideous.
I still wear one under an old helmet in the rain and it keeps my face dry. Use it in the hills as well to keep my hood from pulling down into my eyes.
I also like them because they're free. I've never actually bought one, it's my excuse and I'm sticking to it. :)
