Get stuck in! Orwell winter spins are starting this Sunday - non-members can come and try it out for three spins. :) Details at www.orwellwheelers.org

Great club - give them a try. No harm in joining up as soon as they open up next year's membership. What type of cycling are you looking to do?

mostly road cycling in the leisure section at the minute.

They are a large club and can offer something for pretty much every type of cyclist.

Get out on some of their winter spins - you'll feel all the better for it, and it will help build you up for more cycling over the summer months.

Cuchulainn are a fantastic club, they seem to be able to be "all things to all men" with vibrant Road and Offroad sections. Shame about the jerseys!

Im planning to join Swords cc and get a good fitness base over the winter so I can join the Sat morn racing group with Beasty and the rest:D

Hey Buffalo I've been thinking of joining up for a while now so I think it's time to take the plunge and give it a go so is it a case of turning up on the day or should I email in advance?

    Thanks

Just turn up. Our 1st winter spin ( Orwell) is this Sunday, a perfect opportunity to get started as the groups sort themselves out.

If it's your first time group riding you'll go with the white group to get better aquainted to group riding skills etc, and then in later weeks you can move up depending on your level (the groups are based on average speed).

I joined last year and it really helps having the club spin on a Sunday as it gives you that extra motivation to get out knowing that on a bad day the group will be there to shelter you!

Sunday is a short steady 60k so a 'gentle' welcome for everybody

What Leroy42 said. :) What I did when I started was to go up to the ride leader (they'll be obvious at the start of the spin) and told him straight out that I didn't have a clue about riding in a group, and he gave me a pile of pointers about etiquette etc. Reading http://www.orwellwheelers.org/club-spins-overview.html will tell you all you need to know.

    And some bits at http://www.orwellwheelers.org/forum/9-training/3900-winter-spins-start-this-sunday.html

Stand close to the door of the shop or you won't be able to hear what they're saying. Don't worry if he says, "white group line up across the road" and nobody moves. It's because nobody has heard what he said. :D They really need to get a megaphone or something.

Quite right LD, of course I meant to say relatively short compared to cycles later on in the plan.

I'm planning on joining Orwell this Sunday. Having a gig late on Saturday night and having to be up at 7am for some work is going to work against me though.

If anyone on the Orwell spin sees a ghost at the back of the bunch, that's me.

What route do the beginners take on Sundays? I need to get my act together with organized cycles as I'm enjoying my commute but want to take a step up

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,873 ✭✭✭✭Leroy42

All the Orwell routes are linked on the spins listing http://www.orwellwheelers.org/ and select the Winter Spin Roster link on the right. This opens an Excel file and a link to a mapmyride map is in Column N of the sheet.

For those you in or near the sun-dappled glades and leafy green bowers of South County Dublin, a gentle reminder that Orwell (contrary to popular opinion) are not the only Cycling Club in the world. :)

Yeah, saw you guys meeting last Saturday morning up oppo. Balally. Nice morning for it. Seems your club is growing nicely. Was off up around the block myself.

Was a great morning, until 'someone' decided to start going hard up hills.

I was thinking of joining a club as well, but not necessarily Orwell ;-)

Are there any clubs based near city centre?

I was away last weekend, so I missed the 1st spin. Is it still ok to join the beginners group?

I know I say this every year but I might as well repeat myself.

If you are an affiliated club you are insured to have guests on your spin. Get their name address etc and keep a record of them on your spins. It should be limited to a max of 3 spins after which they should take out a licence.
