I have a Vodafone Huawei dongle, which I use with my laptop, and wish to know if there is any way I can boost the signal strength?

Hmm, not really... you can make it a tin foil hat or put a sieve or something around it!

all about location and signal with these fellas... sometimes i use a usb extension cord/cable and tape it too the back of the lappy or beside a window to get a better signal but that's about it really.. theres some threads here about people boositng mobile broadband signals!

Open Dongle / crack off the case. Locate the antenna and solder on a bigger one (something like a dipole or go mad and get a massive yagi uda) - Use a dremel to do a tidy job. Even glue on an SMB connector to keep it tidy. Problemo solvo

NOTE: you will have to buy a 3G antenna (i think its 2.1ghz but dont hold me to that - 2.4Ghz / 5Ghz is for wifi so don't get one of those)

Once you have cracked open the case you'll notice that most of the Huawei modems have a CRC9 connector on the board so no need to solder anything if you don't want to.
