I got two Chimneys lined six years ago with a flexi pipe. Both fires use solid fuel. Both have been smoking for the past month.Just got the chimney cleaner in and he has discovered the pipe has disintegrated and closed in .He has identified the flexible liners as only suitable for oil fires and not for solid fuel.Do I have grounds for getting the contractor to repair these chimneys. Both chimneys cost €5000 to line.Does the fact that the wrong pipe was used in each Chimney mean I have grounds for a free repair job.I have contacted the contractor and he is calling to look tomorrow.I am not even sure I can find the receipt for the job .Any advice would be really appreciated as times are hard enough without this added problem.

I have never heard that flexi pipe wasn't suitable for solid fuel. In fact, many stove and cooker manufacturers recommend them.

Can you tell us a little about your own care of the system?

What fuel were you burning? Was it always dry and fully seasoned - always? Did you clean the chimney as per the appliance manufactuer's recommendation? Most recommend cleaning the chimney at least twice per year. Some recommend more than that. If you did sweep the chimney the recommended times, do you have any proof? ie. Evidence from a qualified chimney sweep - you'll need it if you want recourse with the installer. I doubt if you'll get anywhere though.

Chimneys don't block up over night. I would be speaking to whoever swept it for you last to fiind out if they ran through the right size brush or if they were able to run it through. Also, you may need to look at the cowel on top of it to ensure it isn't leaking - this could be causing the blockage too!

Cityboyjim - Flexipipe is'nt suitable for solid fuel, IF it is only designed for gas[much lighter construction]......[I think] what your chimney sweep is implying is that this is what has been installed.
The solid-fuel flexipipe is far more expensive. IF your contractor did install the wrong[gas] flue to cut costs then he could also be the type only going to fob you off blaming bad sweeping/wrong fuel etc.
In your situation, I would employ an independent solid fuel installer to inspect it..... and if he says that the gas type has been used then I would be asking for full refund in cash + huge apology. Such a blatent and potentially dangerous 'mistake' would'nt look too good in court so.
