    sorry if this isnt allowed.
I am at my wits end. I have been having trouble with my bottom wisdom teeth, on the right side its impacted and on the left side there are TWO full size wisdom teeth, in the space of one.

I was referred to the dental hospital to get them removed, as it cannot be done in a general dentist.
They become infected (the two on the left) about once a month, and usually go with corsodal rinsing and salt water etc.

Today I ended up in A&E in the dental hosp, as the left side of my face is swollen huge, I didnt sleep at all, and havent eaten since yesterday.
They gave me antibiotics, said thats all the can do, and told me I was on a 25 month waiting list to see a consultant. She suggested me getting the surgery done privately, but i'm currently unemployed. I presume it would be in the 1000's.

I could pay for this using my savings, if it wasnt a colossal amount, obviously.
Can anyone recommend a private dental surgeon aound Dublin, that has reasonable rates?

I doubt it would cost thousands

I have seen prices quoted on what clinic of between 600 and 800 for surgical removal of all 4 wisdoms

Google oral surgeon Dublin and you will get a list of practices to choose from most of them will have fee guide on their website

All 4 wisdoms with iv sedation should be well under the e1000 so if you need less treatment then expect to pay less again... If you feel like you need to pay thousands then look me up...!!;)

the first dentist that found the "double tooth" said that it would be average 1500.
that its not a normal extraction cause of the two teeth together, and this would make the surgery more complicated.

if it's less than 1000 I could use my savings. hmmm.

Op thanks for the x-ray that isindeed an unusual tooth, however I know a guy that would take it out, intact most specialist oral surgeons could take it out, however you have to be happy that there are risks To nerves with this as with any surgery. However there is bad infection present that has greater risks so it's the lesser of two evils. If you want a recommendation pm me.

OS what's you view on the X-ray?

That's a nice supplemental tooth op... It's a decent size extra tooth but shouldn't really change the treatment plan much.
Bottom line is that you have impacted teeth that are causing pain and infection because you can't clean that area effectively. That will not change so you can either put up with it and get antibiotics regularly forever or have the treatment to remove them. Like any surgery, there are risks. In the case of wisdom teeth removal, there is possible soreness, swelling, infection, dry socket, bleeding, altered sensation lip chin or tongue. I would have them taken out but it's your mouth and your decision...

I suspect you have emailed this X-ray to general dental surgeries as any oral surgeon I know would take them out...

    All the best,
    OS

    Op,
I'll tell you what I would do if I was in your situation, the other dentists will disagree and probably ridicule this, but dentists aren't always the straightest thinkers.
This is going to be a traumatic extraction and imo a reasonable risk of nerve damage. If it was my mouth I would extract the tooth directly above it (useless tooth, simple extraction) extract the tooth on front of it( this tooth is badly decayed you will most likely lose it in life anyway unless your prepared to fork out a lot of money for it) this will allow your double wisdom tooth to move up and forward so you should be able to maintain it painfree as long as you keep it clean, your basically losing two teeth that you don't need and will lose anyway, your having two simple extractions ( any dentist) and avoiding a potentially very traumatic extraction( plus potential complications) thats my 2 cents anyhow

I won't ridicule this, it is an option but in my experience the patient's wisdom tooth generally remains impacted and continues to cause pain and infection. When it eventually gets removed the patient then kicks themselves for taking out other teeth in an effort to avoid the inevitable (IMO)....

In this case, if the UL wisdom and LL second molar were removed, the LL89 would remain uncleansable and the problem will continue. Op, how old are you? I'm guessing in your 20s so it is highly unlikely that the wisdom tooth will move forward to adopt a more favourable position if the other molar was removed....

This is the easier option but it is the wisdom teeth and extra tooth that are causing the problems and therefore they should be the focus of the treatment. The second molar is restorable and is by far the more useful tooth in this and most situations, I'd keep it....

    i'll ridicule it.

if you're taking out the lower 7, then you're leaving the upper 7 unopposed and subject to over eruption with potential problems down the road, so why not have the upper 7 extracted also.

the pt isn't complaining of any problem with the lower 7, so it's very feasible that a filling, no matter how deep it is, could be fine.

your plan would cause a big decrease in chewing function on the left hand side.

there's no point in dilly dallying around the problem by thinking if i get something else done instead, then it MAY clear up. MAY isn't good enough. how can you say that dentists aren't the straighest thinkers, then come up with a convoluted plan that will lead to the potential removal of 5 teeth as opposed to the two in question?
the reason that dentists won't touch it is due to the intimate nerve association. if the pt was happy with the risks, i'd take them out. the shape of the roots of the 8 make it look fairly straight forward, which would hopefully make the 9 easier to pop out (basing completely on the xray!!)

Removing good teeth on the off chance that a bony impacted & supernumary impacted tooth with fully formed roots will erupt magically into decent occlusion (not a dire non working side interference) in an adult is ridiculous. Terrible idea, warn you protection before doing that.

Know a dentist that was successfully sued for removing 7 rather than referring 8's

    Jebus  thanks guys.

I have just gotten more mails off other oral surgeons refusing treatment, and I sent an email to tell the Dental Hosp to tell them this. (as they suggested I get it done privately)
I also asked them if I could become a private patient of the oral surgeon, to which she wrote back.
"you're currently on a waiting list, not private"

ahhhhh, the stress of waiting lists is awful, I just came off one for 5years last year. :s

I just dont understand this, we do the training so that we can tackle the difficult cases and yours is not even that bad.....

what i don't get, is that if enough oral surgeons turned her down due to the obvious risk, then the patient is well aware of that risk.
apart from that risk, it's a straight forward case. i'd happily do those, but keep mumbling about having given consent during treatment!

Are the other guys definitely oral surgeons and not dental surgeons?
Are you asking if they will do it on the medical card?

no im not asking to get it done on the medical card, im obviously just hesitant to get it done if so many others are saying it must be performed in hospital.

I can't name the surgeries I contacted, but yes, they're definitely oral surgeons, in well established businesses.

You've all been a great help.

Specialist oral surgeons on the specialist register refused that...it's hard to believe

    http://www.dentalcouncil.ie/files/Specialist%20Register%20of%20Oral%20Surgeons%20(11%20April%202012).pdf

All dentists are not oral surgeons. The teeth are removed the same way whether your in hospital, or standing on your head, it is infact less safe to have wisdom teeth out under ga as there is greater risk of nerve damage and dropping dead from a ga;)

Pm user oral surgeon who posted on here he will sort you out.

Good luck to the OP with whatever she decides on,I got a few out under GA a few months ago and it was an enjoyable experience.
If I need any more work done in the future I will contact Oral Surgeon who posts on here though.
