There are loads of people living in rural Ireland with oil heating and radiators, and there must be loads of people who have made the switch from oil to some other form of heating system.

Just looking to see what people thought of the conversions they did ?
What they would recommend if they were to do it again ?

I would assume that the options are
geo terminal ( air to water )
    wood pellet
    wood gasification

    any other options ?

Solid fuel, Solar thermal and oil fired condensing boiler as a back up in our case.

Spent a lot of money on insulation though. Theres little point in going to the expense of changing the form of heating unless your insulation is as good as you can afford.

The stove in the sitting room with a back boiler pushing the heat directly to the rads isn't much use to you on its own if your leaving the house before 8 and not getting back until seven. You'd only be warm by bedtime. I suppose lifestyle has a good bit to do with the choice you'd make.

Installed this about a month ago. On 24/7. More hot water than I can use. House very comfortable and at the moment costing about three euro per day to run on pea/rice coal. Costs will go up as weather becomes colder. Kept oil boiler as a back up.

Thanks Ddad that is pretty much what we have.. A range instead of a stove.
I was just figuring that as oil is getting more expensive, there must be loads of people trying out new heating systems.
I always thought pellets would replace oil but the bad rap pellet heating systems are getting I think I was wrong..
There must be something out there that can store fuel and allow to time the starting and stopping of the boiler?? Like you can do with oil?

    stoves are the job.

iv never seen a wood pellet boiler to work as described.

loads of ways you can get gas in nowadays.

geo needs alot of space. (dont know anyone doing the bore hole one)
and pump running can work out more expensive than you think

solar i dont think i pays off.

I installed a solid fuel boiler. I agree with corkgsxr and never even considered a wood pellet boiler.

It's a coal, turf, wood burner. At the moment it's running completely automatically (except for filling the hopper) on pea/rice coal.

The beauty is, that it is running 24/7 so you have heat and hot water all the time. You're not heating up for a few hours in the morning and a few hours in the evening and cold the rest of the day.

You can see a few pics here....
