I wonderif this set made October 2010 is Saorview ready?....pretty sure it's MPEG4 and MHEG5.

It has onboard Mpeg-4, H.264/AVC video decoding according to the manual, so it should work OK with Saorview.

Very vague from their UK site if this is compatible but it appears From LG's German site (translated) (click on the all specifications unfold) that it would receive saorview OK.

    Hybrid Tuner (DVB-T / DVB-C MPEG4 HD + SD + 2 & Analog Cable)

Probably best sticking with Saorview certified to be sure.

Where did you see it on sale?

Cheers...bought it from Pixmania in Nov, 2010, was hugely reduced....i did the firmware hack that allows for Divx HD + .mkv playback ;)

Have the latest official 3.75 firmware installed, excellent tv!

IT WORKS! :D ...woo hoo!....i went out today and bought a cheapo indoor aerial:

Think 7 squid is the cheapest around, i just wanted to *see* if my tv was Saorview ready and......it is!
Put the aerial on the window ledge beside the tv and bazinga!....8 DTV channels and 10 radio channels, sorted! ;)

RTE 2 HD looks great, you can really see the quality difference when switching to RTE 1. MHEG Teletext working grand, 100% singal quality....my tv even has an internal booster! :)

What do you mean? Are you referring to a power feed for a masthead amp or aerial with built in amplifier?

The LG has a built-in signal booster :)

No it doesn't. What it has is a power output for a masthead amplifier. This puts 5v DC onto the aerial lead into the TV. It is intended to power an amplifier. If you do not have an amplifer, you should turn the booster power off.

Some Sony tvs have an LNA (I presume this stands for Low Noise Amplifier) on/off option in the analogue tuning menu, which doesn't seem to be anything to do with an external amp.

No TV's including Sony have internal boosters. There would be no point as aerial boosters have to be near the aerial as their use is to overcome cable loss with weak signals. In or near the TV they would just amplify the noise as well as the signal and you would be no better off.

I don't know what LNA stands of on a Sony menu but I doubt if it is low noise amplifier.

    From Sony manual:
    LNA

Improves the picture quality for individual channels in the case of very weak broadcast signals (noisy pictures).
If you cannot see any improvement in the picture quality even if you set to "On", set this option to "Off" (factory setting).

Wouldn't have thought an amplifier in the tv would do any good myself. Wonder what 'LNA' stands for in this case?

    Low noise amplifier.

If you use say an 8 way passive splitter, or a very long cable the signal is very low, but if the cable is good and double screened the noise is also attenuated.

So that's about the only circumstance a built in LNA is any use. It also needs to be seriously lower noise than an ordinary mast head amp. However I have never seen a TV with an LNA. Conversely TVs or VHS or DVD recorders with a local / distant switch that attenuates the signal is common.

It's better to amplify at the aerial or in front of the splitter.

The LG probably just has a PSU for an external mast Amp, like sky box has on RF2 for its "magic eye".

So basically i should set "signal booster" to off in the LG menu?

My LG also refers to a "booster" It seems to be a form of AGC i.e. it automatically cuts in for weaker signals and boosts the signal level.

    Sorry for dumb question ...

We have a Nordmende HD Ready TV which we purchased 3 years ago. I've never had it plugged into the aerial, as it was bought for the Wii in the kids' playroom.

I will check the list of Nordmende Saorview approved models when I get home, but if it's on the list, then what do I need to do to "connect" to Saorview?

    Attach an aerial - http://www.saorview.ie/make-the-switch/

Even if it's not on the list it may have an MPEG-4 video decoder compatible with Saorview, check the specs in the manual.

Plug a UHF aerial, which is ideally mounted on the roof, into it and then tune it in as per instructions in the manual you got with it.
