Hi guys, I've searched previous threads (and there are a lot) for an answer to this but I can't seem to find what I'm looking for so I'll just ask. I've been playing maybe 1 to 2 rounds of golf for the last few years but I'm thinking of getting back into playing more, the only problem is that I don't have a GUI handicap anymore. I'm living in south Dublin and there aren't any close courses that aren't really expensive to join so I'm kind of stuck in a situation where I can't afford to get a handicap. I've heard before that there are some clubs down the country that do a long distance membership for cheap and will accept cards played on other courses to put in for a GUI handicap, but I don't know if places even do that anymore.

Does anyone know of such a place?

Slievenamon is a popular one although plenty will give you stick for that.

I know that near me Dundrum offer a €250(i think) pay as you play membership which includes the GUI which would also suit.

AFAIK Moate do a distance membership package for €200 a year (greater than 100kms away)

Whats wrong with Slievenamon? Do you know if they accept cards from other courses for the handicap?

Thanks for the other course recommendations guys. Blessington seems a bit out of the way to get to but I reckon that's probably one of the best for me.

Nothing wrong really. They do the job for exactly what you need. Just some of their members are renowned for being "bandit's". Not my view, i don't really have a view on it but just be warned people will say it to you.

I have no idea do they accept cards from other courses id say they do.. Give them a call though think its €150 a year or something like that.

Also have a look around a lot of places do good deals on first year membership.

Have a look at the GUI website under membership and see what you think.

I dont think you need to bother with country membership livig in South Dublin

Blessington, City West, Grangecastle and Elm Green ( and probably a few more I cant remember) all do pay as you play deals for around the 250-300 mark. That'll get you your handicap and give you the option of playing at the course when you fancy a game. Save you 2/3 long trips down the country too, to hand in cards.

Is country membership & distance membership the same thing?

I always thought that country membership meant you were a member of a second club other than your home club & there was no distance requirements.

    Think about Ballinascorney Golf Club

    www.ballinascorneygc.com/

    Kilmashogue Lane Dublin 16
    01 493 7755

I think they have a short term offer which wold enable you to get your handicap. It's a friendly club with a good social aspect and you would save a lot in travel costs compared with a country membership somewhere.

By the way I am not a member but know several and have no hesitation in recommending the club

    City West doing 3 deals,
From €250 for basic membership, Handicap and pay as you play.
€400 for 5 Day Membership Mon-Tues, Pay and Play @ weekends
    €600 full 7 day membership

not bad deals really for anyone on a budget.
