anyone know why the European venue chosen for the Ryder cup is always a parkland course

why do we never see the Ryder cup played on a legendary Links course ?

Is there an unspoken rule / gentlemans agreement in place ?

    Anyone know ?

Was thinking about this yesterday myself as to why we wouldnt have it on a links on this side of the Atlantic to catch out the Americans.

But then i thought that at this stage looking at the European Team, im not sure if any advantage could be had from it from a European perspective. Molinari, Kaymer, Colsaerts etc.

Would be interesting to have one on links though...

    Not really unspoken.
The Ryder Cup follows the money.€$€$€$€$€$€$€$€$€
Links doesnt generally contend for crowds, distance from cities, infrastructure, or wealthy local factions or individuals willing to lobby to get it and turn a profit.
If a links course put a financially interesting enough package together, it would get the gig.

It has previously been in Muirfield and Royal Lytham, so its not unknown. And Portmarnock bid for 2006.

The very best UK links courses are on the Open roster, maybe thats considered 'enough' for them.

I think in general parkland courses are more suitable for massive crowds. Links can obviously handle big crowds but not neccessarily crowds which are condensed onto just 4 holes at any one time (for the first two days play).

It was also held at Southport and Ainsdale and Royal Birkdale but S&A has been dropped from the Open Rota since but Royal Birkdale would be a splendid venue with plenty of space for the spectators.
Unfortunately, it is unlikely that it will not follow the money and go to places like we have had recently like the K club and St Pierre.

It is obviously a crowds issue.

The walker cup is generally played on links courses.

    thanks for the info

the crowd issues seems a little odd, surely any course that can handle the attendence for a British Open can handle the crowd for the Ryder Cup.

Personally, I think it would be better if it were on Links rather than one of these soulless resort courses like K Club / Celtic Manor / Belfrey none of which are in any way unique and could be bulit in any country in the world. Links is unique to this part of the world and would add more identity to Europe playing at home.

A British Open crowd following dozens of matches probably isn't the same logistical challenge as a Ryder Cup crowd with 50,000 people following 4 matches. They were saying Gleneagles is built like a stadium course and presumably that's a huge factor in why it was chosen.

$$$ - Waaaay better courses than the K-Club on this wonderful island but the cha ching gets it every time, I was not impressed with the course just played being honest, nothing special
