Saw a car today with three small dogs in it, all unrestrained. Does anyone know what the legal position would be if that car was involved in a crash, can't see the insurance company looking on it too favourably.

First of all - is there any requirement to restrain animals ?

Thread title makes it sound like another garda bashing thread!

You'd think that they* should be confined to a boot with a dog guard or something up. Be interested to know if there is legislation here on it.

*"they" being dogs, not the gardai

Not aware of any requirement in Ireland.

Here they have to wear a seatbelt, or its also legal to put them in and estate/van with rear bars. Its not allowed in a saloon or hatchback for some reason.

In Germany you are required to have a seat belt for small animals or have a separation, the Barrier separating the Passengers from the animals must be TUV certified.

Kinda makes sense really, wouldn't fancy a 10 kilo Labrador flying through the air in the event of a collision or even worse if they see a rabbit/another dog and go mental in the car.
