Mayrhofen, Advice

    Hey,

Considering going to Mayrhofen (about 10 of us, mix of beginners to intermediate), in January.

Ski companies seem pretty expensive so wondering if there are better alternatives.

Where is the best place to fly in to?

How long is the transfer from airport to town and can this be done by public bus/train?

Decent self catering chalets to stay in?

Any advice in general would be appreciated.

    Thanks

Mayrhofen is one of the cheaper resorts to get to in Austria,Try crystalski,Anyway nearest airport is innsbruck followed by salzburg ad Munich.Transfer from Innsbruck is about an hour and fifteen.Chalets are few if indeed any ,They seem to be mostly a french thing.I can reccomend the obermair to stay in.Been in mayrhofen twice before and staid in the obermair and its a top resort so much so im thinking of going back again in jan.One thing to take into account is u cant ski in and out of Mayrhofen. The 2 ski araes are the penken and Ahorn and the quees to get the gondala up the mountain can be pretty long in the morning..Wouldnt reccomend goin the first week in jan as its new year or the second week which sees a huge influx of Russians.

Was in Mayerhofen few years ago, family of 4, no complaints we enjoyed it. Good for beginners & intermediates.

You do have to get the gondola up to the slopes in the morning but get up there early enough and there are no queues.

We used to do our own travel arrangements but go with Crystal now. Usually stay hotel, half board, less hassle more convenient and I don't think we'd do it much cheaper booking seperate.

Went there last year with direct ski, stayed in Hotel Aplenschlossl.

It was grand, B&B with plenty of rooms, nothing fancy but everything you'd need.

Transfer should have been about an hour and a half from Salzburg but got diverted to Munich because of snow in Salzburg and ended up taking about 8!

Top tip for Mayerhofen - get your lunch at the deli across from the main gondola, unbelievable roast sandwiches for about 3 quid. Perfect if you want to do the Ahornbahn in the morning, and the Penkenbahn in the afternoon, as you'll be passing the deli anyway

A cheap backdoor to Mayrhofen is Finkenberg, quieter town just up the road and no q at the Gondola,

Innsbruck - One hour and Salazburg 1 hour 3o Munich 2.5 hours are the closest airports, The train goes right into Mayrhofen from both Salszburg one transfer and Munich one transfer.

There are some great value Pensions in the village of Mayrhofen itself but not to many chalets.

No trip to Mayrhofein is complete without a visit to the Hintertux Glacier.

Deli across form Penkin is the best value food in town as is the Pizza parlor beside the Park on the hill

you could have a look at Zell am Ziller as well. You pass it on the way to Mayrhofen(6km away) It's got 160km of piste and tops out at 2500m, you can hop on the train and ski Mayrhofen and Hintertux if you like, as they are on the same ski pass.

Phili_g and fattes pretty much summed it up. I can add another thumbs up for alpenschossl too, stayed there back in feb and it ticked all the boxes (for us at least). Transfer wise I think you're stuck with Munich or Salzburg, I've looked for flights only from Dublin to Innsbruck which is the ideal route and the one the tour ops. seem to use but have never found them.
Mayrhofen is great, I'd go back this winter only after 2 years in a row I fancy a change. But will definetly return

Thanks for all the help. We're going to mayrhofen in jan and again in march.

Will be 2 of us in jan 1st/2nd week then a group at the end of march.

Has anyone been to the Snowbombing festival there or heard anything about it?

    Snowbombing = :D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D

    Epic week;
Bring one piece of fancy dress, Lots of hangover cures and a strong stomach.!!

Line up is normally epic has not been announced this year but basically they turn the whole town into a big dance party for the week and anything goes

Can it be quite rough? One of the people coming will be a beginner , will they still be able to learn?

Is there events on the slopes? Seemd to be a few extras?, like extra gigs etc that you have to pay more for.

No fear of Violence or agro if that is what you mean? It is normally a great atmosphere and a real party buzz but can be hard on the body! That said you know the old rule. You never have to pack an arsshole as there is always one there all ready.

Yep skiing goes on as normal, it is the end of the season so depending on what weather you get conditions can be either slushy, icy or powder. The great thing about Mayrhofen is that it is quite high the skiing starts at 1,000 Meters so conditions normally hold up well.

Try SMT ski school for your friend they tend to be really reliable.

There are events on the slopes normally at the top of the Penkanbahn lift near the elk bar or at the top of the Ahorn near where the Igloo is. Anything that is out doors you will hear some of the stuff like in the Speakeasy (Club) will be ticket extras. The main street party at the end is Free and the best night of the week.

Was in Mayrhofen for half of Snowbombing this year, we went over the week before to get in some quiet end of season skiing before the place was invaded for the festival, both sides of the week were unreal!! I normally go at christmas but couldn't last year so Snowbombing had to do :D

It was a bit rough but look your going to get that with every festival no matter where in the world it is. One thing I do recommend is if you intend to do any sleeping during snow bombing do not stay somewhere in the centre of town as it gets crazy when the gigs finish every night.

And as for the slopes they can be pretty busy but nothing like christmas, new year or feb mid term. The fresh powder we got this year topped it off. Enjoy whenever ye do go, and if anyone is heading over for new years see ye there :)

If you're looking for accommodation in Mayrhofen have a look at http://www.harakiri-lifestyle.at/.
It's a great new place located 80metres from the main lift.

Any recommendations for heading to mayerhofen as cheaply as possible?
The only week i can go is dec 29 to jan 5 with work etc...

directski seem to be the best with flights, transfer & accom for 7 days from belfast at 690euro...
Is it possible to beat that? Doubt it...

Trying to do a diy version with flights to munich but it doesnt seem to be a runner at all...
    Thank you for any help!!

I doubt you will get anything near to that with a diy job! Especially for that week. Flights and transfer wouldnt be a problem to get (although not as cheap as you have been quoted) but accom could be a nightmare to try and find on your own at this stage again because of the week you are looking to go. Its crossing into the week that the Russians flood the place. So for value and total ease I'd take the package that directski are offering. I would just do a check with a few other providers before booking to be certain though.

I'm going on the 26th - 2nd and it worked out at 230 for flights, 350 for accom and 250 for car rental. DIY job and proud :D haha!

    Dr Nic;
depending on the accommodation that looks like a very reasonable and good value deal.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,323 ✭✭✭Dr Nic

I think its a great deal too, only for two of my own issues.
1 - it has to be 2 people booking. So i need another skiier
2 - i would much prefer if it was flying out on the 31st

again these are my own probs - does seem a greatdeal thoguh!!

Looking at flights to memmingen and then bus to munich, train to mayerhofen. Its possbile but messy. Probably get to mayerhofen for about 220 return that way(and take 5 hours for transfer min), but then you have to sort accom, which would be fairly expensive per night

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,208 ✭✭✭Fattes

Train takes about 3.0 hours from Munich and that includes one transfer. Once you have transferred at Jenbach its straight into the station in Mayrhofen opposite the Nehaus hotel. Not sure how much time would be added from the extra commute to Munich from Mennignheim

Four Seasons transfers below normally do transfers from €60-100 depending.

Anyone interested in 'splitting' a holiday to Mayerhofen for 7 days on Dec 29th?
Directski do a deal incl flights accom transfer from belfast for 690 per person, but you need 2 to go!
    Anyone interested?

    hi guys,

am looking to change ski locations this year to Mayrhofen, have gone to soll in austria for the last 5 years and love it but a change is always good.

can anyone answer the following questions

    1) how is the apres ski? very important :)
    2) is it a small ski village or very large town?
    3) how is mid Jan? would you be guarenteed snow?
    4) how is the skiing? with 600+km there seems to be lots of choice of slopes, are they really busy?

    cheers,

can anyone answer the following questions

    1) how is the apres ski? very important
    - Absolutely Banging, the Ice bar 5 feet from the lift is probably one of the most famous Apres Bars in the Alps after that you have Scotland Yard. Oh it is also the host resort for Snowbombing ENOUGH SAID!!
    2) is it a small ski village or very large town? Medium sized ski town you can walk end to end in about 25 min, Great ski bus service for getting around and good Public transport links to the connected resorts.
    3) how is mid Jan? would you be guarenteed snow? No; Snow is not guaranteed anywhere, Mother Nature is a bitch. Mayrhofen’s skiing ranges from 1,000 – 2,200 so fairly snow sure and they have really good snow making and preservation teams. Also Hintertux glacier is open 365 days a year for skiing and is included on your pass, about a 30 min bus ride also free with pass.
    4) how is the skiing? with 600+km there seems to be lots of choice of slopes, are they really busy?

Depends on the time of year, only one lift out of the village which can get silly busy during mid-term. Either start early or late to avoid the q or get the bus to Finkenberg and go up from there. Huge area and slopes are rarely silly busy as people fan out at the top. Two main runs back to Penken can get busy in the afternoon but this is avoidable

Skiing is great incredible terrain and choice and that is just in Mayrhofen itself, not including Raus, Hintertux & Zell em Ziller and the other resorts in the Ziller valley.

    Thanks Fattes,
    Sounds great.

One thing i forgot to ask, in soll at the bottom of ski area they have a garage where you can leave you ski's and boots each night before you hit the bars, do they have something similiar here?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,208 ✭✭✭Fattes

Depending on where you are staying you may or may not need it.

There is two storage depots at the top of the Penken Gondola so you don’t have to lug your kit up and down every day!

There is also a few in the village. Ski Centre Hubert Kroll and Luigis are the two best rental spots in Mayrhofen.

Couldn't have put it any better myself :) Don't forget the BruckN'Stadl at the bottom of the Ahorn, great spot too for the apres ski and you fall in the door if you've spent the day Ahorning it (so to speak).
On the ski rental Fattes has it spot on again, Luigi's is a tried and tested favourite of mine, Luigi himself runs the shop so its nice and personal :)

Can someone please help me find a train from Munich to Mayerhofen. I think im in big trouble!!

My aer lingus flight lands in Munich on Jan 1st at 7pm. I fly home on the 6th at 8pm from munich.
I assumed the would be hourly or two hourly trains from Munich.
    I cant find them!

Im using this site, and it is quoting 11 hour train journeys!!
    http://reiseauskunft.bahn.de/bin/query2.exe/en?ld=96240&seqnr=3&ident=77.04358240.1352146638&rt=1&OK#focus

    Any help please?
It could be that im entering the wrong destination. Should it be Jenbach or Mayerhofen?
    Thank you!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 85 ✭✭StormGazer.11

There's a train from Munchen Hauptbahnhof to Mayrhofen with a change in Jenbach. Your problem I think is that your spelling Mayrhofen incorrectly. I had a quick look there and your going to have a bit of an issue as far as I could see because of the time the plane gets in, there is a train leaving at around 9 but by the time you get to Jenbach there won't be a connection. I did only have a glance at it though so I could have missed something :) hope that helps :)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,323 ✭✭✭Dr Nic

Ok so nearly sorted. There are direct trains from Munich to Mayerhofen but only at selected times.
Other than that you've to go to Jenbach & then swap

So, i can get the train back direct no problem.
On the way out though, i can only get a train to Jenbach. There isnt a bus or train connecting jenbach & mayerhofen at 10pm on 1st Jan.

So does anyone have any idea how much a taxi from Jenbach to Mayerhofen would cost on Jan 1st? Its only 35km apparently... Would there even be a taxi at that time?

    Hmmm...

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,323 ✭✭✭Dr Nic

You're dead right Storm! Stuck in Jenbach!!

Looking to book a trip to Mayrhofen on the 9th March for a big party group. Do you think it's too late for good snow/apres ski?

No Dj you should be ok for then, Mayrhofens slopes range from about 1,000 ft to 2,200 ft so the snow should still be decent enough. They also have a good grooming team that work their arses off to make sure as much of the resort is open until the end of snow bombing which happens around the end of march/start of april. I was there for it this year and it ran into the first week of april and we had three days of snow, epic powder skiing in April :p and if all else fails theres always Hintertux glacier up the road which is open 365 days.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,489 ✭✭✭✭mahoney_j

Yeadh no prob with snow in mayrhofen for March skiing,99.9% guarnteed and if all ele fails theres always hintertux only half an hour up the road.If u could id leave it till the first week of april and go to snowbombing..Was there last april and the snow was better than it was when i was there in jan,pur epowder and snowbombing was just epic.Serious festival and u also get to ski for the week ,The ultimate holiday really

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,208 ✭✭✭Fattes

djb85; March is the best time for snow in most resorts especially Mayrhofen,

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 205 ✭✭djb85

That's great!! Thanks for the feedback!
Flights all booked now just need to sort accom and hire!
