I have a couple of blocks of land a few miles apart and a quad would be fierce handy in either place but I don't want to get one and have to put it in a trailer and haul it behind the jeep. Can a road legal one be got? If so would you need a motorcycle licence or would the car licence cover you?

Hi , you would have to get a road kit fitted - indicators and the like then get it insured via the chassis number .

it cost me about €350 for the year with FBD. If you havnt got s quad I would advise you buy one with the kit fitted if possible as it costs a few hundred to get done after.

Well worth it though as you have peace of mind !

How does the tax issue work out? What licence is needed? Thanks for the info. Did you buy yours road legal or did you convert it?

Like said above buying the quad with a road kit already on it is the way to go, seems to be a lot of them on done deal at the moment.

dont have a quad (no need on our place) but have always wondered way roll bars are not fitted? have driven them a few times and had one when i was a lifeguard in a younger life. Had a lucky escape and one when part of a track gave way. luckily enough i rolled over a rock and this kept the quad up off my legs. swore if i ever got one i'd stick a roll bar one it. would you need these on a road legal one?

I use an ordinary quad on the road,€180 insurance, car license, no helmet, and have met the cops loads of times, even the traffic corp and there's no mirrors, indicators on it either or tax......chance it, but its a cold bugger of a yoke.

got this from the council, asked cost of tax, cost of fine for no tax is €80, i didn't tax, but have lights front & back just red & white incase day is dull, just go up the road on it wouldn't go too far, insurance from Avia

    Dear

I have checked the criteria for taxing the quad and the following is the position in relation to same.

If you have a Tow bar at the rear it should be taxed as "General Haulage Tractor". The fee for this is
    Annual €310
    Half Yearly €172
    Quarterly €87

If not then the vehicle will be liable for tax based on the cc of the vehicle. You will need to register the vehicle with Revenue, who are contactable on 1890 927 787. They will issue you a vehicle registration number and all the details should be included on form RF100. You will need this form to tax the vehicle.

    The rates for this are
    Annual €185
    Half Yearly €102
    Quarterly €52

If you require any further assistance do not hesitate to contact me.

Who is the insurance with for €180 per year Rancher? Is that the policy which allows you to have it within a certain amount of miles from your registered address?

FBD, I find them a great company, have had loads of claims, and never been loaded, even had the jeep stolen with the keys in it, got paid no prob.
    €4000 jeep+€4000 trailer full comp=€320/yr I'm happy with that
No restriction on the quads insurance
