Hi folks I hope someone here can help me.

I currently have a VW caddy but we are having a new baby and I need to get something that I can fit two baby seats into and also my tools for work so I have it narrowed down to a hyundai santa fe.

My question is in relation to MPG. How bad are the petrol models compared to the diesel? because I can afford a 03 petrol whereas I can prob only afford a 01 diesel! But theres no point getting a petrol if its gonna cost me an arm and a leg to run.

Or is it possible to convert a commercial santa fe back to a passenger one?? cause the commercial ones are a good bit cheaper.

    Any opinions welcome.
    Thanks

We had a commerical 2005 old model santa fe and it was doing 35 mpg relistically maybe 40 it was a 4 wd model. Id imagine the petrol are a bit lower mpg wise. You can convert a commerical back i think but its really not worth the hastle just keep an eye out for a passenger.

If you were to convert a commercial to a passenger one, there's a lot more involved than just putting back in seats. It'll need to be reclassed as private, and taxed accordingly. Also, and I stand to be corrected on this, you may have to pay a VRT charge because that's part of changing it from commercial to private. You could take a chance and drive it without doing any of that, but apart from it being illegal, you may also have problems insuring it.

Oops. Meant to say, I have a 2.2 diesel version. It's doing around the 35 to 40 mark on mpg.

I think your right about the vrt as a commerical it had no vrt charge when it was new. It really is not worth thevhastle of converting the price difference is not that big. Plus alot of commericals would have had a harder life.

The first generation diesels suffer from DMF failure to my knowledge. Honda CRV, Toyota RAV4 or Suzuki Grand Vitara might be worth looking at too. RAV4 1.8 petrol is decent on fuel.

Roughly what annual mileage do you do ? that’s one of the main factors when choosing between petrol and diesel on an older motor.

15000 miles would be the most I would do I reckon. Will look at the other suggestions. Thanks for the help folks.
