While changing chain this eve, came across this brown looking junk at base of cranks. Bike has only about 3,500kms done since new in May.

When spinning chainring with chain off it seemed noiser than it should, running true but a little noisy. Any thoughts?

Looks like a bit of dried grease to me. I wouldn't be over worried about it. If its making a strange noise try disassembling it, regreasing it and putting it back together. Grease will dry up and run like that in a lot of circumstances.

I found this thread http://tinyurl.com/8lruacp and have used it to service Shimano BB's successfully.

does this brown stuff wash off? is it rust/ corrosion? have you been power washing the bike? the hollow tech design means the two bearings are sealed and cant be greased.

No power washing. Light hose down after wet spin with very low pressure supply.
    It washes off easy enough.

Yeah wriiten on outside nut "do not disassemble"

    Thanks
