Hubbie has the above vehicle for the past 18 months. Loves it to bits. It was previously owned by a physio and its never been used for any towing or pulling. 120k miles on it. He has fully serviced it twice, timing belts replaced etc. never had an issue til last thursday.

Was driving to work and about 5 minutes from home he tried to change gear and couldnt. The clutch depressed ok but couldnt get a gear. The garage came and towed it and said the noise from the gearbox when towing it was unreal. Not sure yet if full gearbox needs replaced/rebuilt.

im quaking at the thought of what this is going to cost - anyone any ideas?

Gearbox shouldn't have made any noise if the Transfer box had been put in neutral while being towed, they could have made any damage worse.

It's possible it could be just the clutch. If it isn't best bet is probably a gearbox from a specialist breaker, there's a couple here (someone else will have to come up with names) or several in the UK (they are sold as Shoguns there) such as CWS.

Thanks, I don't think they were able to get it into neutral. Garage called today, and are saying its the clutch and the gearbox. They've sourced a replacement gearbox but it's costing €1800!?! There'll be labour on top. Does that sound right?

Forget it, honestly, just get your own rebuilt. Flawed box, second hand one will also be flawed, that's if it fits(variants galore). Good used boxes for that model are hens teeth and usually on their way out as well. From painful experience with 3 of them. 01-02. 1400-1800 for a rebuilt box is average. Make sure that it is rebuilt though, not just one out of a scrapped paj.

Thinking that - we were talking about it tonight and reckon we'll go for the rebuild and then sell - never again!! Much as he loves it, way too expensive every which way you look at it.

dopey arrangement with one of the output shafts that regularily goes south and is just a design flaw.

IIRC that also has a DMF thats prob on way out too. TBH if your going to sell it after its fixed, I would probably advertise it the way it is now.

Putting €1800 into it and then selling is insane. Either sell it as it is now or fix it and get many years of driving out of it. The gearbox and Dual Mass Flywheel are weak points in a Pajero, otherwise they're reliable.

You think that's best? He does really love it and it's mint otherwise - very well cared for. Just afraid of putting so much money into it and then something else going. Would it even sell in current state?

If it's mint and he likes it, put in a new box, clutch and DMF and run it into the ground. You'll easily get 80,000 miles + out of it. Otherwise, stick it on Donedeal for a grand and let it off. Thing is, if you repair you own, at least you know what you've got.

You would be lucky to get 2-3000 for it in running condition, so if it was me, i'd either sell as or fix it and keep it. but like the others say, rebuild your old gearbox, don't risk a used one. The other thing is if you decide to fix it, get them to test the 4x4 switches and solenoid in the transfer box, they are notorious for giving problems. especially the solenoid if you don't use the 4x4 regularly which 95% of people don't.Its best to do this now as you need to remove the transfer box to get at the switches
