That last day was stuffed with amazing shots but there was brilliance over the first two days too. What gets your vote for 'best shot'?

Justin Rose's putt on 17 gets my vote. Amazing putt under so much pressure and an amazing turnaround. I felt sorry for Phil - there was nothing he could do on 17 & 18.

poulters 2nd shot over the trees into 18 was pretty special

I'm with Kevin in this, Justin Rose was up against it with the crowd still cheering Mickelsons great chip to a few inches and Mickelson heading towards the next tee beaming. He was faced with a putt that no one gave him a chance, it was a case of hurry up ..... lag up, take your three for a half and Phil will finish you on 18.

Against the odds, Rose read his putt pefrectly and bagged a beauty from nowhere ..... his reaction was was brilliant .... look at me, I'm here too!!!!!

That's matchplay golf, just when you think you are home and dry .... it bites you in the ass Mr Mickelson :P. To be fair to Mickelson, he knew there was no answer to such a brilliant finish and fully acknowledged the perfection of Rose's finishing birdies.

Cometh the hour, cometh the man as the saying goes.

Have to agree think that was the putt that swung everything in Europe's favour.

There were probably some amazing shots off camera, but when I read the thread title before clicking into it Rose's putt on 17 came straight to my mind anyhow.

My votes for Justin, some of the other American's may have crumbled (Stricker/Fyurk) but Justin had to finish with birdies against a man on form to complete his remarkable double victory against Mickleson (who took it like a gent and has nothing be be ashamed about).

If it wasn't Rose then it would have to be Molari's 6 footer on the last for outright victory, oh wait a second.....

Ah Kevin, tis torture trying to pick just 1!

I'm in the Rose camp though, it broke the Americans!!!

Pouters last putt on Saturday. Set up the momentum for the comeback on Sunday

Glad to see everyone giving Rose the recognition he deserves. Balls of steel is the only way to describe it. Fair play to the man.

I didn't think they gave that match the recognition it deserved on the Sky Sports coverage - For me the turning point of the whole day. The loaded the big guns to go out and get the early points, which they did. But they also needed some unexpected points to get to the required 14 and Rose delivered it when needed which definitely gave the rest of the lads a boost

Lawrie's chip in v Snedeker. it was a sickener for Snedeker and it stopped any chance of him getting back into the game

I thought Donalds shot on 17 when Tiger had hit it to 6 feet was amazing.
Under that pressure at that stage in the game, awesome.

Has to be Justins on 17 or Martin Kaymers on 18, the nerve he showed to hole that putt was unreal, granted he should have been much closer after the first one, but after Stricker holed his for par the pressure was really on Kaymer. So for that reason I think Kaymers edges it for me although its a toss of a coin really.

Rose was just so cool under pressure, not only to make the putt on 17 while there was the US crowd in raptures all around him, but his reaction was so restrained. I was jumping up and down in the living room but he knew he hadn't won anything yet.

That 5 wood shot over the trees by Mickelson to within 8 foot on day 1 was some shot.
McIlroy's chip on the 11th to almost seal a half on the hole on Sunday.
Molinari's approach to get inside Tiger early on in the singles let Tiger know he wasn't going to have it all his own way.
I'd give it to Rose though-just as well it hit the hole as it was moving.

Now, I know the end result didn't change but I think an honourable mention for Bubba Watsons' chip in for Eagle on the Par 5 on the back 9 was pretty special. He bascially had to hole it to stay alive and he did. We all know what happened next but still an amazing play I thought. But yeah, Justin Rose's putt was the stuff of dreams and deservingly getting the votes.

Phil Mickelsons response captured exactly how classy I felt the American team were over the weekend too. I loved the attitude they brought out, this is serious business but let's have some fun too.

My shot of the tournament is that camera shot of Phil as he watched Justin's putt roll all the way in on the 17th.

An act of pure and utter class that I can't do justice by putting it into words.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 562 ✭✭✭artvandelay48

Loved Mickelson's reaction to the putt, pure class. But what summed up the tournament for me was Bubba and Poulter on the first tee on saturday. Irreverent and good natured and totally in the spirit of things. I would've had my misgivings about both of them before but I was completely won over. And like the Guardian says, I'd like to see Monty deal with that!

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 19,473 Mod ✭✭✭✭slave1

    From the BBC website...

Olazabal said: "It's hard to just pick one but I think the putt Poulter made on 18 on Saturday afternoon was huge. We all knew how important that was.

"If that didn't happen I don't think we'd have had a chance to win. It was crucial."

Colsaerts nominated Justin Rose's putts on the 17th and 18th holes to come from behind and beat Phil Mickelson as his favourites.

"They were among the first couple of big statements," said the Belgian.

Donald shot on 17 for me after Tiger stuck it close was mine shot wise.

But for the timing off it, Rose's putt on 17 made the team believe that a comeback was really possible.

    I'm torn really!

    Tiger's last putt!

I'm sure from a players perspective Poulter or Rose would clinch it but there were some sick flop shots played (I remember one or two from Bradley) that were landed on a dime and needed to be from way off the green. Seems like there is no such thing as short sided if you're a top pro, although I'm sure the rough being like our fairways had a lot to do with that :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,959 ✭✭✭✭scudzilla

Rose's 40footer on the 17th, without a doubt, that putt just ripped the heart out of the Yanks and gave Europe the belief they'd win

That was brilliant, he actually done that couple weeks back aswell on the Tour, seems like its more than just a once off for him!

I remember Gmac going through that at one stage, he had two in one tournament at the Volvo matchplay (and still got to the final), and there was also that horrible hook at the Open. It does happen, although I wonder if some players are more prone to it than others.

Yes I agree that Rose's putt on the 17th was special......that was some putt just at the right time.

His putt on 18 to win the match was also brilliant.

Not a shot, but Rory shooting 32 on the front 9 after arriving with 5 minutes to spare.

One shot that hasn't been mentioned was Rory's chip at the 13th (I'm not sure what hole it was). He had hit a poor shot to the left of the green and had a very tricky pitch over the bunker and at best it appeared that he would be 20 feet or so away. He played the ball low and into the bank of the bunker; the ball popped up and ended up about 10 feet away. He holed the putt for a half.

The shot of the match for me was Kaymer's final putt. He must have known that Molinari was one down and therefore he had a putt to retain or to lose the cup. There must have been huge pressure on him as he knew that it was all or nothing (i don't think Tiger would have messed up the final hole if he needed to win his match).

Yes Rose's putt was fantastic but there wasn't nearly as much pressure as Kaymer's; hole and you are a hero, miss and you lose the cup.

I'm going for Rose's putt on the 17th was the game changer just like Poulter's was on 18 on Saturday but think i'll go for Rose's just because of the sheer timing of the Sunday and the fact if he didn't get that and Mickleson going to the last 1up would have won the cup for the USA.

Some fantastic shots played over the weekend but have to say Jason Dufner's 2 shots on Sunday from a long way back off the fairways of 5 and 7 to around 10 ft both times was fantastic ball striking and finished his match with Hanson off(Hanson done brilliantly on the back to keep the game going all the way). He might have the personality of a nut but the lad can certainly play golf and a major winner waiting to happen

Justin's putt on 17th has my vote (shot of the year perhaps). A serious kick in the ***e for the Americians.

that for me was definitely one of the shots of the tournament. Tiger hits it into about 8 feet on the par 4. must have been around the 3rd hole or so and molinari knocks it into 4 feet. A super shot against Tiger.

As soon as I saw this thread the first thought that came into my mind was Justin Rose at 17. Everyone has described how amazing the putt was so no point in me saying it all again.

On another slightly different note, there were a few shots that gave me quite a lot of satisfaction. Molinari thinning it on 17 against Tiger. Jim Furyk doing the same (I think). After the hype has died down it's great to see that, in the biggest competitions, under the greatest pressure and with the biggest audiences watching....these guys can still blade chip shots!! Just like I can. It's something to think about when you hit one during a club competition or an open. Instead of letting it destroy your head / card..just put it behind you.

The winner of them all though had to be Webb Simpson. On a Par 3, US open champion and the world watching. And he hits an unmentionable. I guess it really does happen to everyone :-)

Can we turn this into a poll thread? I can't do it myself but would be interesting to see the results.

Its fairly unanimous as it is hardly much need for a poll id say 90%+ people are saying Rose's Putt.

I thought Lawrie's chip was probably a close second for me. Not called chippy for nothing!!

Fair enough I didn't really read the whole thread.

Ignore my request and carry on.

Yeah Justin Rose's will go down as one of the greatest. For future ryder cups that will be in the opening credits. Such a pleasure to see it roll in, can only imagine what it felt like to hit it.

Yeah have to agree with the shots mentioned - Donald's shot on the par three after Tiger, Rose's amazing putt on 17, Poulter's second to 18, and Kaymer's putt on 18. Kaymer's putt obviously had the most pressure on it and was brilliant, sooo much riding on it. Overall the day seemed replete with amazing shot after amazing shot. Haven't enjoyed a sporting event like it for many years.

It has to be Rose's putt coupled with Mickelson's reaction. That has to be the essence of the Ryder Cup in one clip.

Didn't Mickleson not give that reaction (the clap and smile) on the 16th hole though. It was after he made the putt and crowd went mad then Rose made his and Phil clapped and gave his thumbs up.

I've heard a lot of places saying phils reaction after the putt on 17 but I remember him just walking off towards next tee.

Didnt he walk away shaking his head? As in, "WTF just happened??"

Nope, TV cut it. He made the same reaction on 16 and 17. Fair play to him.

Clapped and gave the thumbs up on both occasions. However after he done it on 17 then he turned and thought WTF just happened. That's the part TV showed.
