A bit of a sore throat shouldn't affect you too much but see how you feel in the morning. I'd start the run and keep on a route that's not too far from your house/job. That way if you feel bad you can bail out and call it a day.

I use the "neck test": if there are any symptoms below the neck, don't run. If it's just a head cold, running is fine.

Use you own judgement. A sore throat on its own is no reason not to run, but if you think there is something else coming on, it might be better to back off. A 20 miler can always be run a few days later.

I would advise never run with a sore throat.

There is only a few inches between a sore throat and a chest infection.
A sore throat is an infection, infections can spread
And then you could be out for a week or more.
Sore throat usually only lasts a day or so

If its a head cold an easy run

I would advise against it. i ran a 20 miler last year with the start of a head cold/Throat. It knocked me for six afterwards. Your immune system can be quite low after long runs so be very careful. Dont push yourself in the short term. Put your health first

One tip i got for clearing a sore throat - gargle cayenne pepper mixed with a small drop of water, it works wonders. I'll never buy strepsils again...

A spoon of Molkason (liquid version, not the powdered one) diluted into a few ounces of water, and gargle. It is the world's best kept secret. Approximately a million times better than gargling salt water, strepsils etc. The taste is pretty dire at first but you get used to it.

I wouldn't run on a sore throat. Wouldn't agree with the neck test either. I've run before with symptoms above the neck and have ended up with chest infections.

It depends on what is causing the sore throat.

I had one last week, got it checked by a doctor, who gave me the all clear to run.

20 miles on the road with a sore throat will be a lot more than a sore throat at the finish I would imagine. Prepare to feel ther pain!

I've a sore throat myself, with swollen glands. Not going to train until it's cleared. Will have a go at some of these remedies though!!

a teaspoon of this in water (just amount you need for one gargle) and gargle your throat. I have taken everything and it is the only thing that I can take at 3/4 in the morning when I can't stop coughing and get back to sleep. It is unreal. Don't rince your mouth afterwards. Any cajun spice mix will do the job.

To me there is a big difference between "feeling a sore throat coming on" and having a throat infection. With the first one, I take whatever placebo I can find - vitamin C, gargle a disprin, salt, chilli, cajun spice, etc followed by a good dose of HTFU. With the second one, I will go easy for a day or two or see a doctor.

If I ditched a session every time I felt a tickle in my throat, I would probably miss 25% of my workouts between September and March.
