08 2.0 tdci ford mondeo engine whine

    Hi,

Just recently I have noticed my 2.0 tdci mondeo has being making a whining/whirling noise while being revved when stationary and also when accelerating up through the gears. Also the car only has 87k miles on the clock and it is not down in power. The whining, much like a siren, only occurs when the vehicle is warm and will start from 1100 rpm on to 2000 rpm or more. It can get quiet noticeable while in the cockpit also.

I have checked the power steering reservoir and it is full which suggest to me it has no loss of this fluid. Also there are no leaks from the car as the engine covers beneath also seem to be dry. It can sometimes also be heard on roundabouts but it is not consistent here either. Also when would most people suggest changing the timing belt on this model..

If anyone could be of any help, it would be greatly appreciated as this noise is slowly eating away at me?

Suggestions possible fault or remedies would be great.

    Thanks again.

Think these cars have timing chains instead of belts, i could be wrong on that but they do make a whine/rattling noise which indicate they need changing.

I could be completely wrong on this if so just ignore and wait for more experience person to reply :P

does it get worse if you slightly lock the steering while stationary??

On slight lock it doesn't seem to get worse but when fully locked it seems to make a different noise which I have been told maybe be normal.

sounds like an aux belt like power steering, air con or alternator.

There is a small gauze type filter in the bottom of the power steering reservoir. This gets blocked and causes the whining noise you describe. You can't access it to clean it so the only solution is a new reservoir. About €30 from Ford.

If it is the reservoir, does this need to be replaced ASAP and will it do damage to the power steering if not done soon. I assume it's only a small job to replace this reservoir?

It will damage the pump eventually yes. It's a 5 minute job to change the reservoir.

To be honest sounds like could be your turbo, had same thing on tdci transit last year with very low mileage, siren like noise/ turbo whine. Had to put recon turbo in and fine now. Get car to mechanic as soon as you can to diagnose

If it was the turbo the noise wouldn't change when the steering is on full lock though.

Thanks for your help, also I am only getting around 46 mpg combined.. Is this low for the 2.0 tdci engine and should I be getting higher? I saw on another thread that such whining is often caused by the steering pump or rack and can cause decrease in mpg, it's just a thought really..

As the car is still under warranty shud I possible argue for a new pump altogether.?

46mpg is pretty good I would have thought, depends on what kind of driving you do and how heavy your right foot is though :pac:

As for a new pump I would say wait until the reservoir is changed and see if the problem goes away. If it does then the pump is fine, if the noise is still there then you could be looking at replacing both the pump and the rack. It's a common enough complaint with that shape Mondeo though there doesn't seem to be much awareness of it out there.

the original problem was the machine that washed out the racks after manufacturing was programmed wrong and it only washed out every second rack correctly. all the metal fillings built up on the filter then it blew a hole which caused the noise. we would flush the system out with a bottle of ps fluid before changing the resivour.

Hi, it turns out it was a blocked filter in the power steering reservoir. I had the system flushed and a new filter fitted and have had no problems since. George Dalton was correct first time, hopefully the noise doesn't return or else the pump cud be in trouble.

Thanks for your helps guys, will be in touch if problem arises again ...

Sorry for dragging up an old thread, But I seem to have the same issue, loud whine when turning the steering and rev's up. Mine has loads of miles on it, nearly 3/4 way to the moon, whine started this evening. Is the reservoir easy to change? I have access to a ramp or possible lift. What is the best way to flush out system? Is there a particular power steering fluid required?
