Hi guys, when does the new library open? I would have imagined it would have been ready for the start of term but apparently not.

Anybody know? I've checked the library website but have not seen any recent updates.

    Thanks,
    Sean

    Thanks,

They must have an actual date though?

The last reference on the website said "late summer" but October is fairly stretching the definition of summer.

I assumed it would be open for the start of term and I'd imagine that was the plan but here we are!

As long as it's ready for the January exams I doubt most people will feel too upset.

We were told sometime next month, surely they'll have to close it for a few days to move everything though.

That was the plan, but nothing in Maynooth is ever on schedule, they were months behind on removing the foot bridge so it had a knock on effect.

The same thing happened when they did up chill, it wasn't open till the middle of the semester.

It'll get done in its own due course.

Does anyone have any idea yet when the new library will be open? Went to try study in the library today and couldn't find a plug anywhere, the place was jammers!

I think at this stage it looks like January at the earliest, unfortunately.

I used to have the auld plug problem then I got a new laptop with a decent battery,
now I just charge her up before I leave the house.
    Lasts about 6 hours normally.
I was thinking of getting a new battery before,
but (un)fortunately the computer died for good...

I honestly don't understand how the university can't manage to make more plugs available. Surly adding more plugs to the reading room can't be that difficult especially as this has been an on-going problem for years.

Also, where are the SU on this? Why do we never hear anything about this from them?

Power supply is maxed out in Arts Block and in old library. As the library was being planned the SU made sure that they were aware that the Reading Room and Library are as much net cafes now as anything else. Built in 1986, the current library was hardly designed with hundreds of laptops in mind.

There were counter arguments that students don't use laptops as much, the reasoning for which was that the use of NUIM desktops (PACR, library) is up a good bit in the last few years. But the new library will have a beyond ample power supply. There's just no way to provide power for more laptops otherwise.

FWIW, and despite what I believed as an undergraduate, the people in the library genuinely do want to improve services and will bend over backwards to do so.

    Thanks for the reply.

Then bring in another cable. There is simply no technical reason I can imagine why the reading room can't have more plugs. Either the ESB or an electrician can add more capacity as happens every time a new building is added to the campus.

The people who made these counter arguments were short sighted to put it very mildly. I'm sure use of PACRs is up, as is the student population year on year. Anybody who thinks laptop/smartphone/tablet (i.e. things that require plugs) usage is going to or has fallen on campus is categorically wrong.

I'm sure they do but somebody further up the chain has consistently dropped the ball on this issue over the last five or so years. I would suggest that whoever that person is, is either wilfully ignorant or simply incompetent.

Lol, did they not consider that they were up because there were very limited places to plug in your laptop?

Last year the Library was great because they had sockets running the entire length of the white boards where the extension was being added. It was constantly packed, thus proving that the demand is there

Given what you said about the Library's current power running at capacity, I can only assume, then, that those sockets were powered from the still-being-built extension? If so, that's surely a promising sign, they wouldn't add those temporary facilities and then take them away if they weren't going to be added permanently in the future...

    ...would they?

    a) I actually don't know about those extra outlets were powered, but that sounds plausible.

    b) Ha! Ha!

But seriously, I learned from the SU that problems in the library (for example) are not always the fault of the library (in this case).

The library folk are great, and realistically they can't be blamed for problems within the library (as ridiculous as that sounds!). [nostalgia] I remember when it was impossible to print because automatic deleting after printing wasn't enabled. So you had huge, huge queues to print because the printer's memory filled up by 11am and nobody's documents were showing up. It was a problem for years, but had a really basic solution. Once the SU explained it to the staff it was fixed almost straight away. [/nostalgia]

As for power, it's just a question of supply and demand.

I've automatically deleted my work after printing since I was told by the library staff a few years ago at induction. The library staff in nuim are amazing I must say.

    How do you delete it?

According to an email I've just gotten, the new part of the library will be open from the 3rd of December and they will be updating the old part now,

the whole lot should be done in February.

Will they be doing some landscaping around the library? Didn't think there would be a lovely new library and then the surroundings just in bits?

I'm sure they are, the university has grounds staff who will look after that when the builders are done.
