Changing to Something Cheaper - Possible?

    Hi all.

Unfortunately, my new job (Even though i went up in grade) resulted in me losing about half my paycheck. (brilliant). as it is a training scheme, i cant just up and left (and trust me, this so high on my agenda at the minute its not funny).

anyway, the wife and i have come to the realisation that we cant afford what we are driving anymore.

i have a bmw 318 e90 (2006) SE with 120K miles on it, full service history, in brilliant condition. (last service 2 weeks ago).

She has a toyota rav4 2003 1.8 2wd with 118K miles on it, some service history, but in general looked after by the same bmw indy that i use.

We are essentially looking to downgrade to cheaper cars. I would like to sell mine reluctantly, and was thinking of going back to an e46, possibly diesel, but not really need to be as i think i can get away with a petrol car. (I had a 2001 e46 before, and apart from the fact it was old technology, i did love driving it to be honest).

I am not sure how much i would get for mine, and indeed, if anyone can pay cash. I havent advertised it yet, as i am still in 2 minds, and might not have a lot of time to wait before changing cars, as we both need our cars to drive (me to work, her to an internship).

For hers, i think we may need to think diesel just because of the drives. she is doing about 200 miles per week, m50 driving mostly. She would have loved to stay with a SUV type, but it might not be an option to be honest, however i am open to ideas.

We are hoping there is a way to get our car sold, while at the same time, get two cheaper ones, with cash our way. Is there any way of thinking about doing this?

its come to the point where the bmw now has to go. the rav4 maybe not, as its not worth as much.

which would be simpler - selling the e90 straight on?anybody any ideas what it might be worth in cash? i would need it gone and would need to get a new car pretty soon, hopefully an e46, if not, any advice about what else i can look into,

basically something in that vein, budget would then be around 2.5-3k, year not important, a bit of nct, nice car to be in (and not want to shoot myself at the sight of it all the time), i dont mind petrol or diesel, probably less than 2.0L, and no astronomical mileage, as it might need it for drives to limerick or belfast or even cork (once a month).

Ill try and put it on adverts and donedeal tonight. I thought i could keep it, and it breaks my heart to see it go, but its worth a little bit of money that is most welcome at this moment, and i need to pay off some stuff.

Thanks for giving me a little bit of direction as to how to set about doing that...

You should see 7.5k quickly enough in a private sale.

Thanks. i have now set up donedeal and adverts ads. Does that sound good enough?

    http://www.adverts.ie/car/bmw/3-series/2006-bmw-3-series-se-for-sale/2163507

I am not advertising here, just wondering if people think the ad is worth it or not. there is less detail on the donedeal ad due to wording limits.

I would not bother putting it on adverts, all you will get is offers of swapping it for junk or silly low offers. Donedeal.ie is where the biggest audience. Advert itself looks grand to me.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,999 ✭✭✭Spipov

thanks for that. i got two calls from the donedeal one already. will meet up with first tomorrow afternoon at his mechanic, if that falls through, then will talk to second, though his max is only 7100.

will see then tomorrow how things go. thanks for help. i will admit though, i am close to silent tears...

should have put it up for 8 and left room for haggling imo, good luck with the sale anyways should pick up a nice 318i for 2 grand or a decent 320d for 3ish.

You should get 7500, I wouldn't take 7100 unless you're really needing a quick sale.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 51,363 ✭✭✭✭bazz26

Depends on how quickly you want it moved or how much you are prepared to keep having people coming round making offers.

I sold my last car to the first guy that called to see it, we met in the middle between what I was asking for it and what he originally offered for it. I wasn't desperate to sell it as it was only up a few days but dropping a couple of €100 saved me the hassle of going through the same gig again and again with the next interested buyer. Sometimes it is worth it for the sake of a quick and easy sale.

same for me. i cant afford the hassle. if it was up to me, i would have flogged it to a dealer, but we are talking at least a grand less than what i would be prepared to let it go for.

i am thinking though, at the price the car is (ie, 7000+), the amount of timewasters is going to me much less than if it was a car at 3000-4000. anyway, here is to hoping. i will see what the guy says tomorrow about it, but again, i still have the weekend. i dont expect to pick up a car immediately anyway, so i can wait slightly and see what happens. tax disc says 09-12, im not too keen to pay 3 months tax. will i get away with this till next week or so?

Thanks again for the feedback. im hoping to get at least 7300-7400 though.

If someone is going to the trouble of getting a mechanic to inspect it then they are keen on the car. Meeting half way between your asking price and his offer sounds like the fairest price for everyone.

Should do, don't park on street and if you encounter a check point don't mention it's for sale :)

First guy i met was completely clueless. he was looking for a leather high spec e90, for nearly even less than 7000. It was such a waste of time it was not funny. i voluntarily brought the car to his mechanic, who appeared to have absolutely NO idea what a bmw is, fumbled around and turned around saying no, because the steering was too hard.

    seriously!!!

Now, i didnt want a repeat of that kind of thing, i dont have time to waste at this, so i met the second guy, who actually was an ex neighbour of mine, he spent about 15-20minutes with the car and his dad, and we did a deal at 7000.

i just couldnt stomach meeting people like the first one again.

thanks everyone for the help. i am sad, and my wife actually cried, but we are telling ourselves its for the best!

we had a look at the e39 mentioned above. its really nice and to me feels good, however the salesman will not let us drive it to our mechanic, and will not give a warranty for it, saying its over 10 years, so they just are not going to.

such a tough thing to think, when it concerns 2000 euros. Do i take the plunge for that amount, wait for some time (which would then mean getting a rental), or taking the chance anyway, then getting my mechanic to see it afterwards.

car drove fine, engine bay is fine, full service history with what was done.

    tough questions.....

.... Is tell him to keep the e39 if that's his attitude.

Leave the dealer to it, if he doesn't want to play ball then don't get the car. Find another one (there are a few more out there, surely) and they will probably have no problem letting you bring it to your mechanic. Perhaps if it is older than 10 years, buying private may save some money? If it all checks out, I couldn't see a problem with that.

I'd agree with the above. If they are confident of the car they should not have an issue with getting it looked over. It's a ten year old car so may well not be perfect but a flat no implies that there may well be more to it.

Im fairly sure that a dealer cannot refuse you a warranty; that there is a minumum warranty that they are obliged by law to provide.

I agree with the others though; this guy sounds like he is not prepared to stand over this car. I can understand him not letting you drive the car to your mechanic (you really should be prepared to bring the mechanic to the car) but a 10 year old car isnt exactly old, so if he is not prepared to offer at least a 3 month engine and gearbox warranty then I would question what he feels is going to go in the car shortly.

Thanks for the advice. The redeeming feature here is just the car's specs, but the fact, though the car has good history and appears ok, he refused flatly to give any kind of warranty and most other dealers have allowed me to get the car checked out at mechanic's. He only got it as a trade in tuesday this week

Therefore i will move on and keep looking. Ill rent a car and take my time...

Unfortunately when selling a car privately you will encounter time wasters and idiots.

I would not even look at garages when buying something of that age and price, there is no value add as you have found out. No point paying dealer prices for something that carries the same comeback as a private sale.

Better off looking for a well cared for car from a private seller, at least that way you get to talk to the owner which will give an idea of how they treated the car.

Bazz , many thanks. I did a lot of digging around but did not find anything remotely close to the one in the dealer. I went to see a few more today and tried them, and since i have had bmws for the last 4 years, ive developed a little bit of insight in them. The others i tried were automatic, or had poor specs or were really rough. Actually most of them were rough.

In the end i got a mechanic friend and we went back to that dealer's. I did all the necessary checks - motorcheck came out clean and the car's previous owner has had it for over 5 years, and had traded it in for his son to get another car, while he took his son's old car.

My friend pointed out a few things
2 tyres needed, high beam not holding when clicked in and a couple of paint needed areas.

Mecehanically he was actually quite impressed with the car and said it had been very well maintained as well, and did not see any obvious issues.

The dealer will sort the wheels, the beams, an nct with whatever needed done. Truthfully he had only taken the car in on wednesday actually, so in the condition it was in, it had come in with, which was actually really good.

There wasnt much haggling done in the end, but at 1800, unless it dies on the road back home (it might be worth more in parts), with an nct till sept 2013,which it should pass no problem and tax until february 2013 (for a 2.2L), im even thinking it should be a bangernomic, even from a dealer!! (i hope i dont eat my words!)

Deposit dropped and will wait and see what happens after the nct monday

Best of luck with it man. That's a tidy example. And you're definitely bangernomics territory as well.
