I have moved house and can no longer afford sky+, I have free to view bbc, itv etc. I need to be able to record matçh of the day etc. I have an external hard drive, Xbox 360 etc. I am wondering do I need to get a recordable DVD player or is there some devise that will do why sky + that is external. Any advice would be great.

Get a good brand Freesat+ box, I would avoid the likes of Goodmans, Bush though.

My external hard drive does the job so no need to buy a new box. Also I would have sky+ if I could afford living without sky sports is depressing me.

    Can you explain that?
Are you somehow recording directly from the Sky+ box onto the external hard drive?

No an external hard drive is not what you need. A FreeSAT box has an internal hard drive and gives 8 day guide. It allows series linking like a Sky box. It is the best recording box for UK channels.

For the Irish channels you need a TV aerial (not a dish) and a Saorview box. The best Saorview recording box will be launched in the coming weeks (the only approved Saorview PVR) but there may be better models next year. It will allow series link etc.

A single box (combo) solution with external hard drive will not give the same facilities. You can only record what you are watching and not series link. They do not give 7 day guide on Sat etc. They are not bad for 2nd or third rooms or those not too interested in recording.
