Water Pipe Size

I'm geting a well pump for a new build.
The guy providing the pump reckons it would be better to have a 3/4 inch pipe between the well and the house, the plumber says 1/2 inch is fine (currently in place).

I haven't spoken to either of them directly as I've been away but I plan to visit site tomorrow. Does anybody have any advise before I do so?

Yip. Use what ever size pipe your pump allows. Most only allow 1/2"

but to be honest. Your kichen taps where the mains go to will be 1/2" and after the attic tank all will be 1/2" so really. 1/2" is fine. But tbh let the pump decide.

The guy providing the pump says 3/4 pipe, he's more than likely referring the 1/2 heavy gauge hydroder which has an exterior diameter of 3/4 and interior diameter of 1/2 which is sufficient enough.

Going by the average house to well distance, I'd use min 3/4 but 1" would be better. Saying 1/2 taps etc. is irrelevent, resistance of the pipe is what needs to be overcome, to prove my point try blowing thru' different size rolls of pipe and you will see what I mean.

The more water you are going to need the bigger the pipe required.

If the guy providing the pump says 3/4" then go with it, prevent come back in the future. a smaller pipe will require more pressure to get the water through it as aujopimur said, this can cause the pump to cut in and out unnecessarily which is never a good thing

Personally I rarely run less than 3/4" (internal) to any new house as water usage has increased in recent times. There isnt a great difference in price of the pipe and the labour should be no different

If the pump is close to the house [say within 100 meters] and...
You only require the water for average domestic usage and...
You do not require extra water for gardening etc and...
You are sure that the existing pipe is in good condition and...
It would be disruptive to dig up the ground to replace said existing pipe...
Then I would go with the existing half inch Hydrodare.
If any of the above conditions do not apply I would dig it up and replace it with the new [blue] MDPE piping 3/4 inch in size. [ Metric equivalent internal size]
