I am contemplating buying this. But I'm confused by their descriptions...say I opt for roadside assistance cover and home cover does that mean they will fix my car for free If there is something wrong?? Or does it just mean I have access to a mechanic 24/7 but pay the fixing fees extra??

Roadside (home) assistance means generally that someone will come to assist you. If your problem is trivial, they will normally fix it.
If it's something more serious, they will tow your car to the garage.
You will have to pay though for repairs in the garage. So all that will be covered is towing really.

Oh ok..thanks. How much does it normally cost to tow a car?? If it's ballpark same price as AA cover it might be worth my while.

There's roadside rescue which covers them coming out to fix the car or towing it to the nearest AA approved garage

Then rescue plus which is more or less the same but they will tow it to a garage of your choice (ie long distance)

Then home start which means they will come to the house and fix your car there

Check you insurance as many give all the above for free.

Ok thanks. But do I have to pay them extra to fix my car? Like they will come to the house say, and what if my gearbox is gone for example, or something other major? Is that covered? Or is it just that I have access to a mechanic 24/7 by way of being an AA member but I have to pay for the fixing of the gearbox + labour? I'm just confused as to whether I'm covered for the fixing or what exactly I'm actually getting for my money?

Yeah I know but I'd rather not use insurance if I don't have to if sthg went wrong. AA would be better...depending on what it covers

    No.

    Not even that.
You don't have access to professional mechanic 24/7.
No one is going to fix your gearbox on your driveway.
All you get is access to a guy who can come to your house, jump start your car if battery run flat, change your bulb if you can't do it, or maybe fit new alternator belt if your snapped (assuming it's DIY job in your car).
Nothing major is cover, and all they can do it tow a car to the garage (nearest or any of your choice depending on lever of cover you have).
I'm just confused as to whether I'm covered for the fixing or what exactly I'm actually getting for my money?

    Very little...

In some options they might offer you alternative transport in case of breakdown. Or accomodation for driver + passengers.

Many insurers add breakdown assistance where callout doesn't affect your no claims bonus.

Basically all you get from the AA is that you'll never be left stranded on the roadside! They'll either come and get your car going or else they'll tow your car home for you....

As was said, I think the majority of insurers offer this service as part of your cover!

Allianz used to give it for free, but this year they required 30 quid extra for breakdown cover.
I eventually didn't avail of it.
Over last 5 years I didn't have a need to use it, so most likely I'm hoping I won't need it for another 5.
And even if I will, paying 150 for towing, will come the same as paying for breakdown cover 30 quid every year for 5 years.

Thanks everyone. Must check my insurance policy and see what I'm covered for. Might end up having breakdown assistance...
    Thsnks!
