What do you want it for? What kind of trips do you expect to take?

Have you tried looking in your local bike shop? It's worth shopping around and test riding the bicycles you're interested in.

For that price you will get a much better bike second hand.

Also, if you want to buy new, consider something like a Jupiter Tuscan/Vermont hybrid, better bike and between 50 and 75 euros cheaper.

Good advice in the last two posts. Also worth checking your local bike shop to see if they have any 2nd hand bikes, that's how I got back into cycling a couple of years ago.

Each to his own, but to my eye that Apollo Highway Trekking Hybrid Bike looks pretty gruesome. If your budget is €350 - €400, you should be able to pick up a really decent 2nd hand hybrid, once you've figured out what you're after.

Really haven't a clue about bikes.

The apollo can be bought in the north for £200 so thought I might buy it there but if it's gruesome.... really need a site reviewing different makes like Parkers for cars.

    Is there one?

What guarantee might my local bike shop give?

Don't want to buy a pig in a poke either:)

Anyway thanks for the advice so far. Going to google Jupiter Tuscan/Vermont hybrid now.

It looks ok, not great. I'd say it's shockingly heavy at almost 16kg, even for a hybrid at that price.

There's a good chance of getting good value second-hand, as long as you or someone you know is able to tell you in how good a state the bike is.

What are you looking to do with the bike? Daily commuting, short trips to the shops only, leisure cycling?

want to lose some weight and hate walking.

what weight of bike would be ok ? am looking for an 18-19" frame.

looking at the bike sites I haven't noticed many bike details except at Halfords.

one thing I liked about the apollo was the handlebars can be adjusted but if it's too heavy then forget it.

    ootbirb, are you employed?

Is the bike to work scheme an option?

Becasuse if it is you could get a much nicer bike and save a anywhere up to 53% on the price, which would mean you could double your budget. It's also played off weekly/monthly so it's not as bad as lumping up €250 in one go.

    What are your qualifying journeys?

    http://www.revenue.ie/en/business/paye/guide/employers-guide-paye-definition.html#section6.6

    "Qualifying journeys

The bicycle/safety equipment must be used by the employee or director mainly for qualifying journeys. This means the whole or part (e.g. between home and train station) of a journey between the employee’s or director’s home and normal place of work, or between his or her normal place of work and another place of work. That's what tripped me up when I was looking into it, the 40m from the house to the office doesn't really justify a 1k road bike. And for some reason, the revenue seem much better at chasing down smaller misdemeanours than major tax evasion.
