This thread needs more talk about Dave's BIAS towards Japanese wrestling as you know Misawa, Kobashi, Kawada and the lads clearly weren't the apex of Wrestling from a combined an in ring (work rate & story telling), business and cultural POV.

Key things to remember it is only for reference purposes it isn't the gospel or the be all and end all. Also just because Dave gave something ****1/2 or ****3/4 doesn't mean it was sh*te. People seem to lose the plot on this topic. That said I will hunt you down and murder you in cold blood if you think Elgin/Richards was 5 stars. :P

If Meltzer thinks this year has been a good year for ufc he'd want a beating..

That's really silly. For someone with a hard-on for UFC he has raised the ire of Dana White numerous times this year.

He doesn't. He wrote an article comparing UFC's rating performance on Fox to the XFL.

Not to backseat mod but enough about MMA.

he still is one of the most knowledgeable people in wrestling today, he has been writing about pro wrestling for best part of 40 years and anyone thats met him in person will tell you he still has a massive interest in wrestling, yes he is pro ufc and has never been a fan of vince jrs (you only have to read his newsletters from 1983-84 to see how much he detests vince) but meltzer grew up in a time when wrestling was different than the cartoon presented in the 1980s by the wwf, its like those that grew up during the attitude era believe the only way wrestling should be presented is with tons of blood, gore, violence and bad language, meltzer grew up in a time of shooters and idolised lou thesz so when ufc first came around its not surprising he gained a huge interest in the sport

I think it says a lot for WcW that during their best period 1997-1999 and it doesn't say much that the WWE hadn't had a 5* rated match between 1998-2010. How Taker-Michaels at WM weren't 5* I'll never know!

    Any other noticeable exclusions?

Bret vs. Owen at WrestleMania X.

Agreed. Also Bulldog Vs Bret at Summerslam 1992? The red hot crowd, the drama, the wrestling all top class IMO.

The Taker-Michaels Wrestlemania 25 had a lot of dead time and the botched spot with Undertaker missing the dive that the planted camera man was meant to have caught him on. He gave it ****3/4. A lot of people consider it was a mistake at the time and seems like as every year that passes that conviction grows stronger. On the night I thought it was ****3/4 and NOT ***** but I've edged closer to the full five even how the legend of it has grown given how well WWE has marketed it inspiring the rematch and HHH-Undertaker. Worth noting Dave doesn't revise his ratings.

But it was a total carry job by Bret and the final ten minutes weren't that exciting compared another similar match the same month - Rick Rude vs Masa Chono for the NWA title. He gave it ****1/2. I would agree with that rating too as Davey really dragged things down in that.
Bret vs. Owen at WrestleMania X.

Looked it up he praised it to high heaven but gave no real reason why it wasn't the full 5 stars. He gave it ****3/4/. I would agree with that too.

Excellent points made. And I actually agree, I think it was more of the legacy of those matches that make me think they should be 5*. I suppose on a first viewing/once off viewing they prob just miss the 5* rating.

The main problem that I have with this list is that it suggests that Kurt Angle has never had a five-star match, which is ridiculous.

His matches with Benoit (at Royle Rumble), Lesnar (60mins on Smackdown), Undertaker (No Way Out) and Michaels (Wrestlemania) are all five-star matches.

The difference between a ****3/4 and a ***** isn't a zero sum game. ****3/4 is still an absolutely tremendous match.

I don't mind anyone arguing for 3 of those matches but the Iron Man to me is way inferior in comparison to the others you mentioned just too hurt by the ad breaks momentum wise and to me it is too much like a backdrop for a storyline than an actual match.

The matches you listed are arguably 5 stars bell to bell but they don't really have the intangibles to put them over the top terms of say creating a new star, creating a direction to enhancing business or progressing a style. In short they aren't historically significant as great as they are. You are open to disagree.

I am a total mark for the Hart family. But even as a child watching that match (WrestleMania X), I could see that everything was just perfect about it. Hell, I didn't even mind that my hero lost. In my mind, it's the greatest match of all time. I think it just has everything. It slows down and speeds up at the right moments, (to the best of my memory) they aren't cutting to footage of family members on the outside, and Owen gets a clean victory over his brother, while still maintaining his heel persona. Also, there's great humor in parts. Jerry Lawler is as brilliant as he's ever been. Owen flips Bret off when he beats him, and who could forget him walking to the ring in the Hit Man shades?
