    Hi folks,
My parents got some work getting digital up and running in their guest house in the past few days. The way it was implemented was one box per channel (so for 9 channels, its 9 boxes) and was converted from digital to analogue (afaik, because the cabling in the system is the old brown coaxial cable).

Is it much work getting additional boxes for channels? I'd have thought it would make more sense, for Saorview at least, to use the one box with all the channels!

If you use "one box with all the channels", then each tv needs its own box. The "one box tuned to a single channel & its AV output modulated onto a UHF carrier" approach will be more efficient if the no. of tvs is larger than the no. of channels required & saves having extra receivers & remotes in the rooms.

If the tvs are eventually replaced with Saorview capable sets, then they'll only need the satellite channels fed to them in this way.

Ah righty. Is it much work in getting a channel added?

Each channel will require its own tuner/receiver (a pro system will have tuner modules, rather than domestic receivers) & a modulator (these can vary from the more domestic to professional system types). All the work will be at the "headend" (apart from tuning the tvs to the new channel).

For a guest house it makes sense to have boxes hidden away and have a limited number of channels. It stops people from nicking or damaging the boxes and allows those in the rooms use the one basic remote to turn on the TV and select channels and volume. If you want to add channels it's best to get the guy back. If you go messing yourself you may make things worse.
