Zymol and Mer Polish

Does anybody else on here use these products and find them good or am I the only one?

I've been using Zymol on my MR2 since I got it and find it excellent, the only polish that manages to bring up a lasting shine off the red paint on my car. I went into the local motor factors today to buy a bottle and the guy in the shop said he's not ordering it anymore as nobody buys it.

He said he's considering dropping Mer polish also although it is slightly more popular than Zymol. I've used Mer the odd time and the shine does not last as long as other products but it's still very good in my opinion.

According to yer man anyway everybody these days is only buying Meguiars and Autoglym, barely anything else sells. Stuff like Zymol gets left on the shelf for months and months until it quite simply goes off. That's another thing that suprised me, that car wax/polish can simply 'go off' after a certain period of time?!

Anyway I'll go somewhere else to buy my Zymol, I still reckon it's the best for my car. But does anyone else use this stuff and what are your opinions of it?

I've used them all, including Zymol and Mer (which I don't rate at all) and have always gotten on quite well with Autoglym. I've waxed about 10000 cars with it actually :D

Be aware though, that neither one of those products are considered a last stage protection - you are only going to get about 4 - 6 weeks of protection and shine from them.

I've used Autoglym before and would rate Zymol miles better for my car, which is 20 years old and has red paint extremely prone to fading, though I know everyone else seems to love the stuff.

What would be the last stage protection??

Zymol makes good products, Mer wouldnt be up to much!!
People often confuse polishing and waxing to be the same thing. They are two different processes. Manufacturers of polish and wax, through their marketing have blurred the lines. An extreme example: a car shampoo with wax.
When you polish a car; you want the shine to last as long as possible, so it should be protected afterwards - there is no protection in polish, unless its something like an All-in-One type product that is a polish/protection in one - but generally these type of products are a bit mickey mouse; especially if its something that can be picked up in a motor factors - there are some specialist type products that are OK as an All-in-One.

A good wax or sealant is considered Last Stage Protection (LSP). Without a good LSP, you're chasing your tail. The polishing will give the paint a good shine, but if you dont protect it, the finish you've acheived is going to deteriorate quite quickly.
Autoglym Super Resin Polish isnt LSP. Its a very good products if used with a good LSP, such as their Extra Gloss Protection (Sealant) or their HD (High Definition) Wax...some might consider it a bit pricey; but its a brilliant wax.

Yeah Mer car polish comes in a blue bottle! :)

Some of the Autoglym products are extremely good and some are just average. Autoglym's Super Resin Polish, Extra Gloss Protection, HD Wax, Clay Kit, Fast Glass as examples are very good products; some of the rest of the range is OK but better products out there.

There is no one manufactuer that produces a perfect range. The majority of people who are into detailing will pick and choose products from different ranges, to get products that suit their needs best....but will often have a favourite one that makes the majority of products that they use. I use products from various manufactuers, depending on what Im trying to achieve....

    Autoglym: Products above, Shampoo
Microfiber Madness: Microfiber Drying Towels and Buffing Cloths
Meguair's: Wash Mitts, Polish, Dressings, Metal Polish, Shampoo
Bilt Hamber: Wash Mitts, Clay, Wax
Chemical Guys: Polish, Wax, Sealant, Glazes, Interior products
Orchard Auto Care: De-Tar, De-Ironiser, Snowfoam, Sealants
    Collinite: Long lasting Waxes
    Autosmart: De-Tar, APC
    303: Plastics

And a few others that I'd use depending on the task in hand
Anyone ever see that old M1 car wax ?

Never heard of M1....a lot of the older waxes were a nightmare to buff off :) And for the reason some people are put off by waxing, although, most modern waxes are easy to buff off.

Mer is crap in a bottle
Watch the white streak down your panels when it rains after using it..
I remember the M1 wax.. Some tack back in it's day.

As curran said above. Polish is fine as long as you put some protection over it.

I wouldn't exactly say Mer is crap in a bottle, it's effective as a quick polish for very faded paint, but limited otherwise. I've used Autoglym super resin in conjunction with the very expensive sealant and I still maintain that Zymol does a better job on my car than those at half the price.

As the guy in the motor factors said to me, ''it's like the fella down the pub who will only drink Heineken and nothing else, even though it's just fizzy piss''.

What sealant would that be? Autoglym's Extra Gloss Protection? It isnt very expensive, relative to most of the car care products. And they are designed to work together being from the same manufacturer...if you used a different sealant then I can understand the results not being the best because sometimes mixing products from different manufactuers wont work!
To take your pub example - like having 5 pints of Heineken and then 5 pints of Guiness - its going to be "sh1t" ;)

The guy in the motor factors hasnt got an extensive range of car care products so he's going to use that analogy to make a sale! If he had a whole range of products from all the top manufactuers, he's going to tell you to keep away from it!

Other than that is is crap in a bottle.
    Trust me,
I have been there and done that.
Last time I used it was around '93
    Never again

Still using Mer - 'cos I can't bring myself to bin it. Wish I'd bought a smaller bottle 'cos it's poor stuff
