I've heard in other years that studentswho got a 1.1 in their 1st year exams got a sum of money (€250) off the college, is this true and if so when do you get notification?

Many courses give money to those who get an A average in their overall year results.

To qualify for that, not only do you need to get an average above 70 but you also need to get 70 or above in at least 8 out of the 12 modules.

I got it for 2nd Science. Missed out by 1% for 3rd science...:(

It's called a University Scholar award and the award ceremony is held in Feb as far as I remember:)

I thought one of the main reasons for going to college was to facilitate getting a well paid job after. I was also under the impression that a First would further these means.

I suppose it can act as a monetary incentive but in the case of myself it was more the honour of having achieved high marks in my exams and having my efforts to do so recognised :)

Your efforts were recognised by your results

Yes, but the award was just a little extra and in my case it meant a lot:)

There need to be far more incentives for students to do well, scholarships big and small.

And please don't fob me off with book tokens. I know books are awesome, but I'm all digital now :-/

I was told they contact us later this year/early next year about it. All you have to do is regester for college and they take care of everything

They will send you a letter usually quite late in the year.

In my opinion, anyone who can manage to do that we'll in exams deserves the money, the results and the recognition. In fact, I don't think there is enough recognition for good results. Tcd have schols, exams you may take to get the benefit of on Campus accommodation and much more.

So you're saying that employers do not care if you got a First?

I got an interview for 3rd year placement with a 2.2 in first year and 2.1 in second - nothing overly impressive. Have been offered a graduate place. All I need is a 2.1. And even that is just to keep one motivated throughout final year. Employers pick you on your skills and personality, ask you back on your performance and work ethic and in general, don't really mark the difference between a 1.1 and a lesser yet decent result with any great fuss - entirely dependent on the area of work etc. So I do think it's important to have that added incentive of a reward for being a high achiever - in the Engineering Faculty it's a 75 percent average overall you need to get the award and that's no mean feat. It deserves more recognition, in my opinion.

Yes. There is SO much more they look for as Reaparat mentioned above.
