    Hi guys,

I would love some recommendations on places that service/repair laptops.
It's not broken, just needs updating and rebooting or whatever is usual!

Anywhere good, that won't rip me off?

    Thanks :)

Since it's not actually broken - anywhere you take it will be a rip-off. You can easily do the updates yourself.

I will move this over to the computer section where you can get info on how to proceed.

Suggest you start by reading this

Would you care to elaborate on this? Do you think that places that will update drivers, programs, check for vunerabilities etc and charge for the service actually rip people off?

No of course not. It's like paying to get a meal cooked for you that you can cook yourself following a recipe and some online advice.

There is so many ways now to check the integrity of the PC yourself that getting this done by a professional is merely a waste of time and money imo.

If you like NYCityBabe I can help you with this IRL for free, or for the price of a pint. Then you'll see how easy it is to keep your computer up to date.

Yes they do, To reboot a PC takes 5 mins of your time and is not complicated whatsoever. To install drivers is a matter of downloading drivers off the internet and installing them. I asked around for a few places just out of curiosity and the normal charge was 80 euro:rolleyes: . I do that and data retrieval for people for 20 euro. Also add Microsoft office for free. Also perfect free antivirus programs online instead of buying them. PM me if you want some help. Do you OP mean updating Vista to Windows seven or what updates are you keen on?

So that would be a legal piece of software then? Wonder what other gems you put on...

Very good tarring all PC repair shops there in one swoop as a waste of money.

OP, if you're bringing to a shop, get a quote and if you hand it over either make sure you've backed up your stuff or explicitly tell them to. Most places will do back ups but some will wipe without a second thought.

Like everywhere, you'll get good business but on the off-chance get those who don't give value for money.

You can attempt to do this yourself, especially if your machine has a recovery partition which should give you the option to do a factory restore.

if you have a recovery partition you can do a fresh install with about 5 mouse clicks...then it's just a matter of updating any of the drivers that are outdated..

Wow...all restaurants are a rip off too??? I guess mechanics are a rip off...in fact pretty much anyone you pay to do anything for you is ripping you off. Glad I read this thread and cleared all that up.
