    Hello
Its that time again when i am looking to change my present car :D At the moment i am driving a 11 Octavia vRS diesel. What other comparable cars are on the market at the moment? The following the main criteria.

    1) Under 2 Litres
    2) Newer than 11
    3) Hatchback or Estate (very important)
    4) DSG type preferred but manual not ruled out.
    5) Diesel engine
    6) Under 30K retail price.

Engine size shouldn't matter too much since tax is co2 based after 08. Unless there's another reason.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 582 ✭✭✭HJL

You should buy a Skoda Octa . . . oh wait, you already have one.

This is going to be difficult seen as boards only ever suggests the car you already have! This will cause an infinate loop.

It's a diesel, practically new and also is the vRS model. You clearly don't need a new car at all as you have the perfect one!

The new (2012) BMW 328i has 242bhp and is just under 2 litres. Maximum performace from that engine size, around the same size as the Octavia and comes in manual or auto. In tax band C too, amazing really for the performance.

Amazing car indeed but too expensive for my pocket. I also want a diesel as milage will be high for next couple years (30-40K per annum)

I'd be hanging in to test drive a new model Mondeo in 2013, it's a cracking looking machine and given Ford's talent of producing great driver's cars I would be expecting anything less than a good drive too.

There's a kinda Mitsubishi galant look to the headlights. Kinda find the Aston style grille a bit funny though

I was in your shoes and looked at lots of different options and also drove a few.
Each of them was a let down in different ways.
The only thing I was going to take a chance on was the LE Superb L&K,
Only 40 of them coming into the country,
Decided against it and ordered a new vRSwhich will be with me next week.

When are you due to change?

You should be able to get an Alfa Romeo Giulietta 2.0 JTDM for around €28k.

I ordered my one around june 21. It was in dublin about 4 weeks later. It is still up there,
Hopefully it will be down and sorted for next week.

I did consider keeping it for another 12 months and buying the New vRS when iut arrives late next your. Maybe something for you to consider?

This is the best looking hatch out there, worth considering. Alternatively you're stuck mainly to VAG for 2 litre restriction and the price you have, so the Mondeo when it comes out is a good suggestion, but chances are any decent version of that will be more than 30k. Is petrol an option?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,626 ✭✭✭✭vectra

    Kia Optima? Only 138bhp though.

    Superb L&K LE?

A test drive should confirm if he is happy with the power. I thought it was nippy enough.

    I think Tarrant has a L&K on a 12 plate. Whats Le??

    over 38k I think.

Ok im back and still havent changed car. waited to see when new vRS would be in and seems like it will be late in the year. Change of circustances (all good) mean i will be needing a Estate. Criteria as follows (some small changes)

    1) Under 2 Litres
    2) Newer than 10
    3) Estate
    4) Automatic preferred but manual not ruled out.
    5) Diesel engine
    6) Under 30K retail price.
    7) Must have Ooomph :) i am NOT going back to 105BHP for anyone lol

I am serious about moving away from Skoda as i have had a few of them now and am itching for a change :) They have served me very well and would have nothing bad to say about them :)
at the moment im interested in the following

    BMW 520D Here
    Avant A4 Here

More ideas would be appreciated. UK imports also looked at :) Anything in particular i should look out for?

Its not engine size you need to be concerned with its emissions. So the under 2 litres might not be so relevant. Although a lot of the cars you'll be looking at will fall under this by chance.

Disabled driver, so has to be under 2000cc to get tax relief

You said that last year too :D

Is the budget flexible in any way?

    http://www.carzone.ie/search/Volvo/V60/D3-R-DES/32113500346209990/advert?channel=CARS

Shame it's only the D3. It's not bad, but the 163 is quite a bit better. Should be able to land one from the UK for under 30k. Just to confuse things, the 163ps engine was known as the D3 before they introduced the D3. If you are looking at the UK, then emissions over 120g on a D3 would mean it's the 163ps engine.

5 Cylinder diesel engine feels more powerful than the figures suggest - feels quicker than the VRS in 163ps guise.

So what your saying is that the D3 was a working title in the Uk for a previous model and is not the same as the D3 model now been sold?
How does the seats down room in the Volvo compare to say the Superb Estate or the 520 and 320 Touring**? Thinks this can buying malarky will get complicated :) but fun :D

Budget is around the 26-27K invoice price. very little wriggle room past that :(

** these are the only estates i have got around to seeing in the flesh todate.

Now where would be the best place to find out all the differances between E61s and F10 :eek::eek::eek: all those numbers got me brain cell in a tizzy :)

I know you say you are moving away from Skoda but you also said you were waiting to see the new vRS.
Unfortunately that will not be with us until around Aug/Sept as far as I am aware.
A buddy of mine bought a Race Blue combi recently and told me there was also a silver one floating around.
Might be worth your while checking. I think Galvins in Bandon had it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,712 ✭✭✭✭R.O.R

D3 was Volvo's offering in the 2 litre diesel segment - up against the 3 series and A4. With 163bhp it was aiming at the 320d and the A4 170ps. Priced well against those, but was losing sales to the 318d and A4 143ps, so Volvo took the engine, de-tuned it and re-launched it with 136ps, but decided to keep the 163ps version and re-named it D4.

Boot space in the V60 isn't great. It's more of a Lifestyle estate than a load lugger. If you want a load lugger with more space than you can ever need, then look at the V70. Generally a better level of standard kit than you find in the 5 Series Touring or A6, and cheaper to buy. 2.0d (up to mid 2010) is geared a bit wrong so not great to drive, but late 2010 onwards they put in the 5 cylinder Diesel (D3, renamed to D4) which should be much better (haven't actually driven one - not in great demand in Ireland).

I think the V70 is a cracking looking machine in R-Design specification, and you'll land one from the UK for a decent price. Not worth paying the extra for the built in Nav as it's a pretty poor system.

Most of the late E61's you'll find will probably be Business Edition models with the built in Nav, Bluetooth and Full Leather. Very little difference specification wise between these and the F11, but F11's wouldn't have the Nav as standard (pricey enough option). Still gets full leather and bluetooth. Early ones don't have the USB as standard on the 520d, became standard in mid 2011 I think.

Yeah i was told august too with a waiting period of about 8 weeks after. Which would be effectively 2014. :(

Yeah i will need space alright ... After taking up a new sport and the bike is a long yoke :D definitely rear seats down when loading it :)
The lack of demand in Ireland for the V70 estate would be a minus point against it for me.

Dont the F11s have a SD Card slot?:rolleyes: E61s are the 520 Touring? (bear with me im a slow but determined student :) )

How good are is the Sat Nav and how much for the updates? Is it possible to use satnav from a smartfone through the sound system??

E61 is the old model 5 Series Touring. F11 is the new model.

Don't think there is an SD card slot in the BMW's, that seems to be an Audi thing. USB connectivity was a fairly cheap option on the early F10/F11 so there may be a few with it specified - it's in the centre armrest from memory.

Sat Nav isn't a bad system - there are 2 versions, business and Professional. Not really sure what the difference is except the Professional has a larger screen. Updates would involve buying a new NAV disc from BMW - no idea on the cost, but probably over €100. Can probably be downloaded for free from some dodgy sites.

Don't think there is a way to use Nav from a Smartphone through the screen. There is a very expensive option for full I-Phone integration (6NR) so you can get Twitter/Facebook updates through the I-Drive screen and stream we radio etc, but that needs Nav and the USB specified anyway.
