    Hi all,

Cycling from Galway to Newport next week. If anyone is familiar with the route could they check my map below? I was advised to go through Leenane as it is much safer and more scenic.

Also if anyone has any tips I would be grateful as it's my first "big" cycle.

A beautiful cycle. I have cycled from south Connemara to Wesport on many occasions. If I were doing it, I would consider continuing along the N59 to Caher and turn right along R344 (as opposed to R336 at Maam X) through the beautiful Inagh Valley and linking up with the N59 at Kylemore which takes you into Leenane. Past Leenane, I would recommend turning left along R335 which takes you past Aashleigh Falls and through the beautiful Delphi Valley into Louisburgh and Westport. I am not sure if you are taking the cycle path (Greenway) from Westport to Newport but is a much better option. I cycled the Greenway some weeks ago and it was thoroughly enjoyable. Keep us posted and let us know how you get on.

If you're going to Newport you may aswell continue on to Achill, a stunning route.
I drove from Westport to Clifden yesterday, saw a few cyclists out, lucky sods, ie. it's a fabulous route also ;)

I agree. If you are in Newport and have the time then get on the greenway to Mulranny and on to Achill. Stunning in places.

As maidhci says Inagh Valley is beautiful BUT its the most natural wind tunnel you will find so Id be a little wary at this time of year.
Also Leenane to Westport is actually quite open.

If you would like a little climbing after Kilmilkin(you can see the road on your link between Maam and Leenane) turn right for Finny along the shore of Lough na Fooey. Over Maumtrasna on to Tourmakeady along Lough Mask and into Westport.
2 climbs but their worth it.

Def go whole way to Achill
