I am in the Summerhill area of Meath I have been paying a guy €100 for a 6x3 trailer load of hardwood logs and it just seems quite expensive. I am looking for a better deal anybody know some one doing a small truck or high sided 8x4 trailer of logs (hardwood) or Turf ? How much should I expect to pay ?
Thank you in advance for any numbers or advise you guys can give me.

6x3x ?. What height in the trailer. BTW either it is a 6x4 or 5x3, don't reckon it can be 6x3.

A bit much for logs but not bad for split hardwood.
How high are the trailer boxes ?
I can supply you with both, turf and timber, but Im to far away to make it worth my while. :(

Yes its a 6x4 sorry :-) The trailer is heaped a little but not much and the sides are just standard trailer sides about 24 inches high. Whats the difference between split hardwood and hardwood logs
    Thanks
A guy told me Turf is better value what do ya think ?

Noel K - y' mans' trailer will hold 1.3 cubic metres of logs if filled to the top of the 24" walls.....I'd imagine it was'nt... - probably more like one cubic metre.
100 euro for a 'cube' of quality,WELL seasoned, split hardwood is o.k when buying this small amount- you will detinately get a discount for larger quantities.
P.S -what species of hardwood did you have delivered ,was it dry and did it burn well?

Agree with Wayoutwest, you probably get 1.2 Cubic out it and if it is hardwood as opposed to softwood (pine) then that price is par for the course. Please PM me the name and number of the guy as I would like to get some myself :D.
BTW, you could however get 10 bags of doubles at 12 each which would throw out far more heat.

Obviosly logs have to be ringed up and split before you can burn them, thats quite a bit of work.
Good turf is on a par with most timber but even the best of turf dont compare to ash as a fuel.

Hi guys it was Ash and was wet but burned grand. What are doubles ? I have tried mixing anthracite with the ash but its hard to get going we have a small stanley fire and I prefer wood. Might try turf this winter though FISKAR will have to get the guys permission before I give his number out will foreward next week thanks guys

If he is happy to have you PM the number via email through boards that is fine.

Doubles are the smaller version of large lump polish coal (Black diamond) . A garage up the road from me is doing them at 12€ a bag, yes they is NI stuff but I went through one bag last year and I was impressed with it over nuggets. I too run a stove and kept the doubles aside to get rid of the nuggets (lignite coal based and lower calorific value). I intend to get more before FG and the F***er Hogan bans coal in Navan. (pure business related if you ask me)

Noel - I would be deleting your present log supplier's number, rather than giving it out - 100 euro for a cubic metre of un-seasoned hardwood is a rip off. Ash when green has a low moisture content (35% ish] compared with other woods, but should not be used as firewood {epecially in stove/range],unless you have dried it so it is only >20%. This means that for every kilo[of the wood you have bought] -you are having to burn off at least 150 g or approx.half a large mug of water more than if you were to burn a kilo of properly dried wood.
You have saved yer man a lot of work [stacking/drying/storage/extra handling].....which is all right.. if, you got it for a much lower price, built a well ventilated covered shelter and did this work yourself.
Saw offer today in local farm supply shop -10 bags of doubles/get one free [12.50/40 K]. They give you a plastic card that they punch every time you buy one, so you don't have to buy all 400 kilo's at once.

Thanks to both you guys for reply. FISKAR are you sure doubles are suitable for a closed appliance ? I thought it could only be anthricite or similar. Think I am gonna try doubles if they are ok in a stanley fire ? Is it easier to light than anthricite or ecobrite nuggets ? I only run my fire for a few hours in the evening usually and by the time nuggets are hot enough am usually going to bed :-) I have been using BnM briqquets last few weeks as I dont have a supplier for turf, did not want to use nuggets etc and was unsure of value of the wood !! Complicated I know :-) Thanks guys

To be honest I have no idea what is involved. But any second income that could bring a person 5k-10k a year (one or two customers a week) extra money should not be sneezed at in my opinion. If I knew where to buy the trees I would give it a go to be honest. Also I have an office job but love doing anything manual in my spare time, woodworking, welding, mechanics etc as a hobby and the few friends I have in construction type jobs tell me that the going rate now for a labourer in Dublin is €80-€100 per 8 hour day through the books ! say you want your garden dug etc it kind of puts the €100 for logs in perspective. Just my opinion. Do you think €100 is good value ? I posted here to ask that question and everybody's opinion has the same value.

Doubles easier to light than Antracite which is the hardest to light. I mix doubles with wood so have no problems. Used them in a stanley and now a Morso stove
