Just noticed my 1.9 tdi is running a little hot when driving .
Temp gauge is normally at 90 all the time but lately it's going up to 100 sometimes while driving .
Heater is working perfect and turning on the blower will bring the temp down pretty fast .
Top of the radiator is hot and the bottom is cold .
I'm thinking the thermostat is faulty but while looking up forums they say that they can't stick closed .
It a 2002 model and the water pump was changed with the belt about 30k ago .

Any suggestions would be most helpful

They certainly can and do stick closed. Its a more common failure then sticking open as the spring will push them closed.

    Thanks for the info .
I'll take it out and test it tomorrow .
Done some more research and it seems the water pump has a plastic impeller that fails on them too
Had that happen with a BMW 318 a few years ago .

When you have the thermostat out you can easily check the water pump impeller through the hole that the stat sits in.

    Lovely stuff thankyou .
Cheaked it out there and it's just 2 bolts between the diesel pump and the alternator to cheak both parts

    A wee update
Took off the return pipe from the header tank and water is circulating .
Removed the thermostat and the weather pump seems fine .
Tested the thermostat in a pan of boiling water and it doesn't open
