A part time job advertise as:

    Part time job
    3 days a week
    36 hrs per week.

I'm am on JA at moment.
    if i got this job,

    1. Could i work 3 days and sign on for the rest?
    2. Would 36 hrs a week be considered by SW a part time Job?

Its worked out on days worked rather than how many hours, not sure what would happen if a 12 hrs shift crossed over at midnight, say on your 3rd day, guess even an hour over would be classed as a 4th day of work, then you would get no payment for that week or any week that that happens afaik.
    Part-time or casual work

If you get part-time or casual work (up to and including 3 days per week), you may still be paid a proportion of your Jobseeker's Allowance. However, you must show that you are trying to get full-time employment. If you have been getting long-term Jobseeker's Allowance (15 months or more) and you take up part-time work for less than 24 hours a week you may be eligible for the Part-time Job Incentive Scheme (PTJI). This scheme allows you to take up part-time work and get a special weekly allowance instead of your jobseeker’s payment.

Your job income for the three days is taken into account when assessing your means. It is calculated as follows:

If you are working 3 x 12 hours shifts this is considered full time by SW so you will not be entitled to jsa. On the other hand if you have a partner and children, depending on your wages from this job you could apply for family income supplement.

Sorry to confuse matters ,not been signing long, im on job seekers benefit, if it makes any difference, anyway if i cant get payment because its 36 hrs a week and seen as full time by SW , it would not be worth it , i would be bringing it alot less to live on.

It doesnt matter whether its jsb or jsa 3 x 12 hr shifts is considered full time by sw.

Just rang social welfare office and citizens advice this morning, both said, 3 days at 36 hrs, will be part time and can claim for the other days, this is on job seekers benefit.

Thanks for that info hope it works out for you but I am 99.99% sure that 3 x 12 is considered full time work.

It has to be full-time Nig - 36 hours. I know that it's 3 long days but I'd be shocked if it was considered part-time.

If you were to work 20 hours per week but spread over 5 days, would this entitle you to any JA?

Nig, this page is about Jobseekers Benefit but the rules would be the same. If you scroll down you'll see:
    (a) Day of Unemployment
A day is not treated as a day of unemployment unless on that day s/he is capable, available for and genuinely seeking work. (See below).

A person is not regarded as unemployed for any day in which s/he is engaged in self-employment, is working under a contract of employment (written or otherwise) or is in receipt of wages. For example, the following classes of persons would not be considered 'unemployed':

permanent full-time teachers who receive payment in full in respect of school holidays
a person who is voluntarily job-sharing
a person who is on a career break (during the agreed period of the career break)
a person who is on garden leave
a person who has been suspended on full pay
full-time nurses who are on a rest week following a week of night duty
seamen whose contract limits them to 84 hours a fortnight and who have worked the full 84 hours in one week
persons who work the equivalent of full-time hours by way of intensive shifts. It is usual to treat persons who work 36 hours per week or over as being in full-time employment.

I cant understand why welfare office and citizens advice have told me different, Debtree post clearly contradicts this.
i went for interview this morning on this information, if i get it, and then go and try to sigh for 2 days but instead take me off dole completely, i would really struggle just on the part time money!

My late husband worked 3 x 12 hour shifts Nig but he was never able to sign on for the other days. Having said that I don't think he tried to. I'd be interested to see how this turns out. I hear what you're saying though. If you sign off, take the job and then don't get the money for the other days that will be hard. But if that happens Nig then I do think your wife should sign on herself for jobseekers allowance.

How is 36 hours per week "part time money"? If you're on 9.50 an hour, it's 342 a week. How is that part-time money? What are you expecting in the current climate?

I have just phoned a different welfare office and the answer now for 3 days 36 hrs is, no, i cant sigh on.
    1. welfare office ,yes
    1. citizens advice, yes
now one welfare office says ,no?

Phoned back first welfare and citizens advice again, both put on hold for several minutes to see if i can claim for 3 days 36hrs,, then came back to me saying, sorry wrong information this morning given, you would not be able to sigh on for 3 days36hrs work. 36 hrs class as full time job.
I cant surely be the first person to ask how many hours would a part time job be class as, but i certainly stumped alot of people this morning., even thought i highlighted the 36 hrs on both occasions .

Employer as got back to me and offered me the job at 2 days, 24hrs, 2x 12hr shifts, this should be classed as part time?

Yes but you will be means tested and your claim will be payment suspended until you bring back in the forms that you will be issued with for your employer to complete.

I work 3 night shifts a week and claim JSA, which actually means Im working on 4 days even though one of the days is one hour of the first night shift. I have been told many timeS that its not the amount of hours per day that count its just the days per week that are taken into account. Ive also worked the odd extra day without any hassle.
My wife works 30 hours a week over 5 days and is considered full time by SW.
Its a total contradiction, I can do more hours part time than my wife working full time and I still get JSA.

Even welfare office and citizens advice were not right, told me it would be ok for 3 days at 39hrs, then another welfare office said no you will have to sign off.
