Is it illegal or is it legal?
Here's a video to show what it is.

As far as I know its legal. I've assisted in treating once. I have no idea who breeds them or where the owner got hers though.

I don't think most people have enough space for them, this country can't even look after it's dogs and cats properly we don't need more exotics coming in as a phase.

Why would anyone want one? It has complicated needs, is the size of a person, and is not a domestic animal.

And why is that a problem?
If a person wants an animal domestic or not it's their problem not yours
If they are willin to look after and meet the problems then that's their business
    I have a hawk
Am I not allowed because u say so?

Nightowl I know of a lad up the north that brings in exotic pets including species of large cats snakes etc
He's fully Licenced but he won't get one unless he knows you've done your homework on the species

Might not be a domestic animal but they have been kept as pets for years.

legal , in republic of ireland , if you can source it you can keep it as a pet , not many laws here on what animals we can keep

Where do they get them from? Are they bred here in Ireland, or stolen from the wild?

You only need look at the plight of the slow loris to see why the exotic pet trade is such a bad idea.

they could be bred anywhere in the world ,
and that point makes no sense about the exotic pet trade to be honest

So you don't know if they are taken from the wild?

My point does make sense. The slow loris in Indonesia is under threat of extinction because of the illegal pet trade.
It started with just a few people wanting them as pets and now they are facing possible extinction.

Why do we need to take from the wild and bring animals into captivity? We have already domesticated plenty of species.

The video posted by the op makes reference to them being eaten on Fridays cause the pope classified them as fish.

As for having one as a pet I think it be cool. They look class but you would want to make sure you have the right environment for them. In the video people are in their swimming pool with them. Looks nuts and when I seen tread I thought it was not a real animal.

Reminds me of when I took care of a Giant Flemish bunny for a few months.
Have you thought about one of those, OP?

...funny how noone has even considered the fact that they shouldn't be kept on their own..they are generally a herd animal and must have access to a large body of water. Their diets are complicated and they're very large there's a lot of practical things to consider. They are related to guinea pigs and to be honest over the years I've seen some terrible results of peoples ignorance when it comes to the basic needs of those animals so can only imagine if the poor Capybara became the latest craze..can't imagine they're easy to rehome...just like small monkeys became a craze a few years ago.

There's no point gettin any animal without the proper enclosure and homework done on it
And a animal like that will cost a few bob so why pay loads and then not look after it

Sad thing is plenty of people in this country pay hundreds for a pet esp. pure bred dogs and don't look after them money doesn't always = sense.
