Playback Sky+ recordings without sub

moving to a new place and taking out a new Sky sub, so they're giving us a new HD+ box.

I know in theory when I cancel the old sub the recordings on our existing Sky+ box will be unplayable, but I notice that if I put in my old (expired, Yellow House) viewing card I can still play recordings made from FTA channels like BBC and Pop - with no card inserted I can't play anything. Is this by design? (trying to work out which recordings I need to copy to DVD, which is a tedious process).

It can be done, but you have to have to remove the drive and stick it in a USB caddy/enclosure and then rip the files.

    Useful guide on Youtube:

Please note: Obviously you should only use this for recordings from non premium channels, otherwise you are most likely infringing on Sky's copyright protected content.

thats to copy the files onto another hard-disk, which I'm not bothered doing - I basically want to know if I can continue to play the recordings from non-encrypted channels on the old Sky+ box (in which I won't need to record them onto DVD).
