    Hi Y'all
I'm currently a Bord Gais customer for my electricity and wondering if anyone has priced any of the other elecricity providers?

My average 2 monthly bill is e300+.

Any help, advice or past experiences greatly appreciated.

    300 seems high,
do you have a landing strip feeding from your electricity.

do you heat your water and house heating from the leccy or do you use gas for this.

no gas. everything is done off the leccy....

if everything comes off the electricity then that doesnt seem too high (assuming you arent using Oil for heating also!)

but good thing to do is check the unit rate you are charged and check the other providers rates. move to whereever is cheapest

might also be worth your while looking into nightsaver as well?

    as above,
    no to airtricity
not many people notice, but their standing charge is higher than the rest.

^This is something that, as you say, few notice, probably why best to use Bonkers to compare.

I have had the hard sell by AirTricity 3 times at my door and they love telling you that their unit rate is the lowest. It was only on the last visit that I actually read their literature and compared it to my latest bill, and seen that I would only save maybe €40 per year (bills of €110 every 2 months) due to their higher standing charge.

I had Airtricity in my last house and I would never use them again. The staff really didn't seem to be able to deal with any queries I had when I phoned about my account and while they were nice people to deal with over the phone it was frustrating not to be able to speak with someone who was able to help.
They were also quite a bit more expensive than I had anticipated and it has been ...........well difficult lets say, to close off the account fully since I sold my house.

sorry...I meant to say that the house is heated by oil.

Nightsaver def looks like a good idea surely.
Is Electric Irl the only provider with that option?
Is there a cost incurred in having a nightsaver metre installed?

sorry I jumped a bit quick with that post.
just checked nightsaver........ what a load of bollocks:11pm -8am winter and 12mn - 9am summer. We'd be up all night puttin on the immersion, the washing machine and the tumble drier!
and I think theres a charge for the extra meter.

There are little timers that any electrician will wire into your fuseboard for you- which turn on or off various circuits at various times. People don't get up at 5AM in the morning to turn on the immersion. The laundry and tumble dryer might be a different issue- I haven't seen a separate tumble dryer in so long. If you're going to have to physically transfer laundry from one machine to another- then, yes, you have an issue.

Just this week we switched to prepay power. Prices are the same as ESB but you can monitor (through a digital display) exactly what your using at any given time. You can check previous days to see what you used.

Our neighbours were with them a while before we joined as they've noticed a big drop in the amount of money they use over a 2 month period. Their bill went from €380 per 2 months to €200 per 2 months.

Prepay power works like a mobile top-up. You buy credit in a shop and enter the code on the keypad(that's placed near your fuse board). Check out www.prepaypower.ie

Just to be clear, I have no connection to prepay power. Just a new customer who has a few neighbours that have been with them a few months.

You're being slightly disengenuous saying the prices are the same as ESB (Electric Ireland). Yes- the headline per unit cost of 18.38c standard urban is the same. Yes, you pay the same Public Service Obligation charge and standing charge. You do however have an annual Pre-pay Power standing charge of 136.71- and you don't have the optional discounts (up to 17% off per unit if you are dual fuel or 14% off per unit if you're single fuel and elect to get your bill online and pay by direct debit- which knocks 2c a unit off the headline unit rate from the ESB).

If your bill fell from 380 over a 2 month period to 200 for a 2 month period- you must have drastically changed your energy usage- e.g. if you're comparing one two month period where you were running storage heaters etc- with a 2 month period when you were not- obviously you'll have a remarkable difference.

It may be more convenient to know exactly how much electricity you're using- and the headline per unit rate may be the same- but you're paying a 140 Euro per annum standing charge for using the service- and you're missing out on a 14% (possibly 17%- if you also use gas) discount that you could potentially get from the ESB.

    So- I'm

Most modern washing machines and dishwashers have a built in delay start .
So the night saver could possibly work
