I have to get my parents a new tv . They only live in an apt and are not huge tv buffs. they just want the irish channels.

Budget around €250. max screen 24 but could probably convince them 22 is big enough.

options for 24 inch seem to be the likes of walker, nordmende, one of walker models is a dvd combo for €269,but I believe the sound is often a problem on those combis?

can get a toshiba 22 inch for 239, which I know will be reliable etc..

anyones opinions appreciate especially in relation to the quality ofthe walker tvs, ie picture quality, sound and reliability etc.

    thanks

I think the best value on a small set at the minute is the samsung ue22d5003 for 179.99 in argos. (and you will also get a 10 euro voucher if you buy it before the 30th Sept.)
Dont expect quality sound from any of the smaller screen size tv,s.
It,s possible to add a good set of computer speakers through the headphone socket.

Note that many Toshiba TV's (not all) are now being made by Vestel, the same company that makes Walker/Nordmende/Teknica, etc.

The Toshiba 22" is the same set as the walker one...which is a shame and a large stepback by Toshiba ...

The Samsung is Saorview approved so no problem there. Good tv with good solid remote control and it,s 1080p edge lit led. good fast mheg 5 text loading. Buy it.

Thanks , have one booked. Just one question- I assume there is a basic aerial slot on the back as they will just be connecting the standard coax aerial lead. It says nothing about that in the spec?

Yes it has an aerial connection, you will have no problems with this tv, just remember to set it to country "ireland" on the inital setup screen, dont rush through this inital setup. It will pick up all the saorview and radio channels assuming your signal is ok and if you are using a sky box through rf aerial lead remember to switch it on before scanning.

Thanks. There will be no sky boxes. checked the signal in their place with a saorview box and it gets all the channels on there old 14 inch crt- so I assume it would then tune in the channels on this tv obviously without the stb!

finally, what do you think of the sound?

    No more questions, I promise!

Personally, and im sorry to dissapoint you but i think the sound on this and all the smallscreen tv,s are rubbish. But then that,s just my personal opinion, I dont think that you will find one with quality sound.
The best bet is to set it up and say nothing at all about the sound to your parents and see if they comment on it, if not then that,s grand but if you need to then the best solution is to add a good set of computer speakers and i mean a good set not those small laptop speakers which are no better than whats in the tv. ask any questions you want to,thats not a problem.

Something like the "Trust Wave 2.1 Speaker Set" can be bought for €45 on Amazon(incl delivery). The amp is built into the subwoofer.

Why not scan for the FTA channels there's no need to scan scrambled channels.

theres no fta option on it u can do a manual scan but witch transponders are free to air it has no freesat option like a sony tv i once had but gave up the ghost

Go on to the Walker website and download the channel list for the TV to a USB stick and programme your TV from the USB stick.

I tried the Walker Sat list ....... and it seems a mess TBH at least when looking at it on the TV here.

I might try editing it and see what happens ..... although I get an error on opening it that some characters are not in UTF8 :(

There may be software similar to that available for Ariva 120 & 150 that can be used to edit channel file on a PC.
