Hi I'm looking for a laptop for college/home. I cycle a bit of the way to college so it'll have to be at least a bit portable. I can spend up to about €400 for it and I'd prefer to buy it in a bricks and mortar shop around Dublin but I'll travel for a bargain :p
Basically something that is cheap and will do all the basic stuff on it, not really big into gaming so that's not a factor, a decent battery life is a plus also.
I like to watch movies on it sometimes with the girlfriend too so HD would be a bonus.
I've a compaq presario now that's brutal so anything better is a plus.
    I've been looking at these.

Under 400 Euro, B&M and a Core i3 processor (although 1st gen) at Argos.

Since you're carrying it around on a bike, consider some cheap SSD and replace the HDD, not only is it much more robust, also makes it a lot faster and more responsive.

Being honest, I wouldn't worry too much about an SSD, your budget is tight enough as it is. I've cycled to and from college and now work for years, with laptops, and never had I had any hard drive trouble. It would make the system a lot faster, but at the expense of storage space.

How much data you want to carry around on your bike? :D

Being honest, I'd worry very much about a SSD. Platter HDDs are usually the first thing to break down in a laptop, it's the nature of the beast. And as for the budget being tight, a 128 GB Kingston SSD goes for 65 quid on Amazon.
