@Mod: my phone runs Android but this is not an OS specific question so please don't move my thread.

I noticed when I went to charge my phone last night before bed that the the micro USB connector was loose enough when in my Vodafone Smart II to keep falling out, but I reconnected it, went to sleep and thought no more about it until now.

Today I also tried charging it but now my Android battery indicator is showing red and is on its last legs because it will not take charge, although it strangely does offer to mount itself as a USB storage device.

My charger is made up of a mains power plug which connects to the male regular USB end of the micro USB cable, and because of this I have been able to connect the cable to my PC ruling out the actual plug as the problem.

I am very much hoping the problem is just the cable, the connector of which seems to have been bent upwards, rather than the port on my phone which doesn't appear damaged.

My question is this; is it common for these cables to fail, and is there anywhere in Dublin City Centre I can pay closer to the eBay price of €2 rather than the Argos/Maplins/PC World price of ~€9?

The €2 shops will usually have them for €2.

Yeah, Micro USB is very flimsy in my experience.

I did a thread search, to see if anybody else had this problem. The micro USB connection was giving me the same problem on my Xperia Ray. Looking into the port didn't show anything obvious. However when I poked the tip of a sharp blade into it, I managed to extract a wad of lint from the bottom of the port. The connector now goes in fully, and stays connected.

If, like me, your phone spends a lot of time in trouser pockets, this could be the cause of your problem. :)

You can get little covers to fill the space of the port to prevent this. Ebay should have plenty of options, colours to suit all phones. Usb dust cap should fine them, they often come as a set with one for the 3.5mm headphone jack.
