Ok guys found a nice looking mr2 its 91y,only concern is the mileage is 200k miles on it,owner claims it has most service on it and was well looked after garaged/covered when not in use,the pictures do look like its just been rolled out of the factory :) it has 2l non turbo engine thats what i know for all,and the reason im posting here because the car is on the other side of the country, and dont want to travel 3h with 0 mechanical background to get disappointed. So would appreciate any advice is it even worth bothering about the car with such huge mileage, and what parts had to be done on it so far or might be falling out soon of it.Asking price is 2k so dont want to be jumping into money eating pit with nice shell  .
As always any advice will be appreciated.

Not exactly a rare car so why not hold out for one you have no doubts about but with regards to your question , 200k wouldn't be massive mileage for a 21 year old car if it has a very good service history , no SH in my opinion walk away , could be 300k for all you know. If you're not capable of doing repairs yourself buy the best you can rather than the cheapest.

You could get a compression or leak down test done ,this would give you a fair idea of the internals of an engine.
Or even a simple vacuum test if read correctly can give a good reading of an engines condition.
You cam buy a vacuum guage for a few euros.

3hrs away from him and he has zero mechanical background .

Have you tried posting on www.mr2.ie ??

The guys on there live for MR2's and will do all they can to help, may even offer to go with you to check out the car.

They are not that rare but good ones are. Almost all MR2's now (mk2's especially) will have been crashed, modified or driven to within an inch of their life.

Tbh 200k isn't massive mileage on these engines, they have been known to see 250k easily and in America there are MR2's with 500k on them. I'd rather buy a high mileage MR2, knowing it has been looked after, than a low mileage one that has no history at all.

Best of luck with it anyway, they are a great car.

If its reasonably well serviced, and a Japper, particularly of that vintage it should be alright.

as for buying a good one everybody ones one,but they cost double if not triple in most cases.Dont mind servicing the car brakes/oil/sprak plugs, but when it comes to head gasket, transmission, worn pistons/seals then its no go as it will spend more time in garage while parts being sourced and put in
now if engine was rebuilt at some point i wouldn't mind, but 200k miles is 320kms and thats a lot.So still got a good weeks time to think about this one,but i think ill give it a pass.

The idea that you need to spend 3 or 4k for a good MR2 is well and truly over now, unfortunately for us that own them. Really nice and well minded examples are being sold for less than 1500...which is insane really for the car you are getting. Bide your time and I reckon you will find a mint one for less then 2k easily.

The thing that attracted me to this car its paint condition,if it not corrected and leather interior  as it seems almost flawless, and that's reallly hard part of finding one that would be without rusty arches/or some sort wear and tear, even the weather can do enough damage over 20 years time.

Funnily enough my own MR2 is identical. Same year, same colour, leather. Only difference is that mine is a sunroof instead of t-bar model. I had it up for sale only about a year ago too but held on to it in the end...glad I did too.

It seems a nice car but surely you could get it for much less than the asking...

nice mr2 v480,nearly bought myself one like yours only it was automatic and had sunroof, the guy was asking 900e from 1200,of advertising, after inspecting it,i offered 700e as it wasnt leather, doors panels were damaged and sunroof bouncing with doors closing down :D,also engine bay looked rough. So estimated that to make it worth id need to put another 1k at least,as paint also was beginning to fade due to clear coat loss and paint splatter on side mirror.heres a linky:http://cars.donedeal.ie/for-sale/cars/3765091

as much as id love one ,will have to let it slip, mileage seems ok for that year but 1k price should be fair for what it is,as someone pointed theres some popping for less then half and being bought the same day with better specs.thanks for your advices thou.

This caught my eye, though it is a steep enough price for an MR2 these days:

    http://cars.donedeal.ie/for-sale/cars/3981791

    Very rare to see a 2000 mk2.

Have you ever considered a mk1? This is a really nice mk1 MR2 for sale on mr2.ie

    http://www.mr2.ie/mr2-forum/6-buy-swap-and-sell/45751-1989-mr2-mk1#49788

It is keenly priced, as mk1's are holding their value better than mk2 or mk'3's. Plus you benefit from lower tax, smaller and cheaper tyres and apparently better fuel economy.

Yeah the first one caught my eye,its out of my budget thou.Someone with garage and hobby in mechanics could have a proper future classic. As for mk1 its not the same as make 2,same as they ruined mk3,for some it might be appealing but for me its a step back.

Saw this and thought it might suit you: http://cars.donedeal.ie/for-sale/cars/3989087

Seems in good enough condition with NCT and a reasonable asking price.
