I'm currently driving around 450 - 500 miles a week in a 1.4 petrol and want to change to a diesel for fuel savings. Would also like a bigger car to soak up the miles. I'm driving a civic at the minute and it's not the best.

Budget would be 2000 - 4000. If there is a good old barge at the lower end of the scale then I'd have no problem with that.

What springs to mind are Pug 406/Citroen C5/Passat/Mondeo/Laguna. Does anyone have any advice?

If you're buying any of the above and you're not "up" on cars and the mechanics, make sure to bring a qualified mechanic with you.

There's a lot of crap going around in that price bracket and diesels at the moment.

Yeah I'd definitely be getting them checked out if I were buying one of them.
