Is anyone else here on Boards doing this course? If so, could youy recommend any books I should buy, or just borrow from the library?

Doing Dental Science myself but the books required for subjects are more or less the same across the health sciences faculty.

Physiology - Cells to Systems by Sherwood or another book by Guyton and Hall are both quite good

Anatomy - Netter's Atlas and Gray's anatomy for students are both good but pay particular attention to the Anatomy Dept's webCT notes and the marking schemes

    Histology - Ross Histology

    Microbiology - Medical Microbiology

    Biochemistry - Biochemistry by Berg

Those are all the subjects I can think of off hand. I wouldn't advise puchasing any of them as there is a plentiful supply of all those in the Hamilton and those are only suggestions as there are tons of books for each of those subjects and you might find other ones that you prefer so look at a few. And if you're furnished with a reading list by your department, I'd adivse favouring the ones they recommend.

Thanks for the quick response, I'll give the Hamilton library another look tomorrow. I've heard the Medical Microbiology book is recommended, so I might buy that.

Holla, I'm one of the HHD peer mentors! We'll probably be sending you all out an email with advice about books soon (we haven't received a list of your emails yet!) but I can give you some pointers here :)

First of all don't panic about books, you don't need to buy them asap and it's best if you try using books you're considering within the library first to make sure you're happy with the style and content; there's lots of different books for the same topic and people have different tastes. That said the books most people choose and are most often recommended are:

Human Physiology by Lauralee Sherwood is a great textbook which details all human systems and is written in a very easy to understand way. It'll be helpful for a lot of your physiology based modules, and it's also the recommended textbook for the physiology course you do in second year so you'll get a lot of mileage from it!

Biochemistry by Stryer is the standard biochemistry book and is useful for many modules you'll do throughout your 4 years. There are Loads of biochemistry textbooks however, and here is an area I'd recommend you try one or two books in the library first to make sure you're happy with it. I find Stryer to be very informative and well laid out but everyone has different tastes!

Other books you might have recommended to you in your course handbook are Wheater's Functional Histology and Langman's Medical Embryology. There are loads of copies of these in the library and you shouldn't need to buy them. I did buy them and I haven't got as much use out of them as the other two I recommended. You may want to get a book for chemistry but there are lots of good chemistry books for individual topics within the module available in the library so it's not necessary. You won't be studying anatomy until your second year so don't bother buying a textbook for it now.

Hope that helps, you'll be hearing from us soon about it anyway, we're trying to gather up 2nd,3rd and 4th yrs who are willing to sell on their books to you 1st yrs at the moment so if you wait you might be able to get a good deal on some of them!
