Sky+HD / Hannspree TV issue

    Hi Guys,

I convinced my dad to switch to Sky a while back, so he got the dish installed, with a sky+hd box in the sitting room. At the time, the TV in the sitting room was an old CRT. The installer set it up so he could also watch it in the kitchen via rf out. Anyway, my dad got into the whole thing, and asked me to pick him up a new telly for the sitting room. I got him a 42 inch Full HD Hansspree in DID (model SK42TMNB). I hooked it up to the sky box with a hdmi cable and it all worked fine. However, when he selects a HD Channel (BBC HD for example), the screen in the sitting room (which is connected directly by HDMI to the box) goes completely blank - can't even see the sky menu if he presses tv guide. However, if he changes channel back to a standard definition channel, it comes back on. I'm planning on going over there later to have a look, but I did look at it before and I couldn't see any settings on the TV or the Sky box that jumped out at me. I emailed Hannspree and they said it's a Sky box problem, and the sky installer guy was very helpful, but said he had never heard of something like it.

    Any thoughts?!

    Thanks,

    Ronan

Cheers for the reply Muffler. Had a read, but I don't think it is. I did have a quick attempt to fix it the last day I was in my dad's but he was in the middle of watching a match, so he told me to leave it. Maybe I'll be able to figure it out, but I figured I'd put a question up here to see if anyone had any ideas.

Try turning down the level of the HDMI to 720p and see if it works at that

Thanks steveon. While googling how to do what you suggested, I came across this link which seems to be relevant. I'll see how it goes when I call over to my dad's and give it a try http://helpforum.sky.com/t5/Sky-HD-Picture-Sound/Switching-between-a-HD-output-to-SD-output-on-HDMI-locks-up-box/td-p/337797

No problem it could be some form of Handshaking problem maybe, or perhaps the tv simply cannot display full hd....a lot of people claim 720p is much better on some tv's so it's definetly worth a shot.

    Hi Guys,

I was over in my dad's yesterday, so I tried changing the HD output format on the sky box. It was on automatic previously, so I tried 1080i and 720p, and both resulted in the tv screen going blank. The TV is full hd, and there is nothing in the settings of the tv that made sense to change. Does anyone have a hansspree tv that they can watch HD channels on sky with?

    Thanks,

    Ronan

Thanks Campo. It makes me feel better in a way, because it means either there is a setting that can be changed to fix it, or something is broken.

I'm thinking I might bring my sky box and hdmi cable over to my dad's, and try watching something I've recored in HD on his telly. Anyone happen to know if that's feasible or will the sky box realise it's been connected somewhere new and stop me from playing back the HD content I've recorded in my place?

Got it sorted. Bringing my sky box didn't help, because I couldn't get it to work over in his house. I'm not 100% sure, but it seems plugging the hdmi cable into the HDMI1 socket (on the side of the tv), and restarting the Sky box did the trick. It had been plugged into the HDMI2, which is better placed at the back of the TV. Doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me, but it's working so it's grand. Dad had gotten a call a few weeks back offering him the HD channels for an extra €5 a month, so I told him to try calling them back to see if they'll still give him that deal. Thanks to all who replied.
