I have recently bought cheviot hoggets and was wondering what breed of ram would be best to put with them. Im a part time farmer so, i want as hassle free lambing as possible. I wont be keeping any replacements so hope to be sending all my lambs to the factory.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

A Suffolk for fast growing and finishing lambs.

Would be a pity bringing the ewe lambs to the factory as they would be great replacement ewes and if brought to the mart in the autumn they would be well sought after by buyers looking for replacements for their own flock.

See previous thread on the same subject here

I actually recommended Suffolk as well on the last thread, but someone else said Charolais...

IMO the lambing problems you might have with a Suffolk on Cheviot would be low enough, but the issues would be lower with a Charolais.
And as you will be selling em all, I would see no real reason to get a Suffolk ahead of a Charolais...

So - contrary to what I said before, I would say a Charolais might be a good bet

cheviot hoggets.... best of luck with that.... hardship all the way... better with a crossbred hogget.

forget about suffock with hoggets unless you like loads of trouble. charolais is the best way to go especially if you intend selling all in factory.
