    Hi all,

Wondering if you might answer me this, I recently bought a 2009 1.5 dci nissan qashqai and this morning I felt a bit nippy so turned the heating on full I drove approx 4.5 miles to work (dropped the baby off and was about 5 minutes out of car) and by the time I got there the heat was wasnt even near lukewarm, is this normal or should I contact dealer???

    Thanks,

    Toes.

Was the engine up to temperature, should be around the 50% mark between hot and cold. Try putting the fan on lowest setting so heat has a chance to build up.

I had a tdci focus before and it used to take forever to heat up. I drove from Santry to Celbridge one morning at about 20mph in the snow and the temp gauge never left the bottom. There was nothing wrong with the car btw, diesels are more thermally efficient so takes them longer to heat up.

Diesels are awesome when warmed up, and a 5 min drive will not get the best out of a diesel car.

Yeah by the time I reached the job it was at half way but the air was still pretty cold :(

Another reason why diesels aren't overly suitable for short commutes, is 4.5 miles to work your daily spin? Even though the engine might be up to close to operating temp there's no way the full coolant volume will be hot enough to sufficiently warm the cabin.

And remember the temperature has dropped a good few degrees, so it will take longer to get to working temperature anyhow..

Diesels take longer to warm up and 4.5miles isnt long enough. Also not good for the engine.
This is why less cheap and crappy (no offense, but diesels of old vs the commuter rubbish of today are different worlds) have/had electric heaters (Webasto branded usually) to rapidly heat the cabin. Afaik, all/most German made diesels still pack them unless buy one in a warm climate zone.

I think some cars ( A-class mercedes maybe? ) have something like one of these :

fitted from the factory to make it a bit more comfortable.
