Not sure if this is the right place to post this, but would be grateful for all advice. I have a 6 year old boy who adores all the karate moves etc (sorry!) He really needs a boost for his self confidence at the moment (has recently lost his Dad) and I was thinking of enlisting him in a martial arts class (say that loosely cos I know zilch about it). He's a big lad for his age, not overweight, but is way taller and bigger boned than his classmates. He's a gentle fellow too. What would you recommend?

Send him to a couple of different classes and let him do whichever he likes the most.

I'd recommend Judo, Boxing, Muay Thai or MMA if its available nearby with kids classes, if not then whatever has kids his own age also attending thats close.

Again its all about whatever he finds the most fun at that age

Perhaps you can give the general geographical area of where you live, so people can give you advice better?

I teach 6 year olds karate. They are great. However, some are slightly difficult. Mainly due to them having a short attention span (which is natural at that age, and I am very patient with them, however the ones with good attention spans are a lot easier to teach). If he has a good attention span, I'd definitely recommend karate. Any style, Shotokan, Wado, Kenpo, Kyokushin or any of the others. It'll give him confidence, a good base fitness level and when he is older he can take what he has learned further if he so desires.

I upped my childs class to 7 as the 5 and 6 year olds where just too immature to learn proper and where slowing the class progress massively.

Judo is great for small kids, seems to be very geared for them, more so than most martial arts.

Yeah there a few. If its just the stand up we're talking about then personally if I had kids and was paying for them to train I'd prefer if they learn the correct basics instead of learning how to air punch wrong and throw flicky nonsense kicks.

Grappling comes natural to children so I'd recommend any of the grappling/wrestling styles and in particular Judo where there is a healthy development programme to bring young judoka through to high level competition.

    Where are you OP?.

I have 7-10 year old class and they love it, covers the fundamentals but is all about the fun, It's like doing a kickboxing and bjj class in 1, no big deal.

When I started thinking about it, I must have tried boxing before I was 10 even if it was just a few lads taking turns to put on the gloves trying to punch the head off each other !!! And when you think about, young lads as young as 6 or 7 take up hurley and get wacked across the shins, fingers etc Same with Rugby etc

My 7 year old has been doing Tawekwondo for the past year and hr loves it.

We have an mma kids class near us,would it be ok for a 7 year old to do both Taekwondo and an mma class or is that too much?

Does anybody teach in the Navan area of Co Meath?
Her loves power rangers and wants to be like them.He already goes to swimming and does what his teacher says and listens well.
I think it is good for a parent to send their children to lots of things after school to help them develop and learn new things.

Not too sure of the age groups covered but there is a Kung Fu school by the courthouse, the boxing club is in the CYWS Hall and a Taekwon Do club out in Wilkinstown you could try. Performance Martial Arts from Ashbourne have kickboxing in Aura Leisure Centre on Saturdays, it does say age 8+ but you could talk to the coach.

Nothing else in Navan I know of personally, for Brasilian Jiu-Jitsu you have to go to Royal Grappling in Dunboyne or PMA in Ashbourne and there is no Judo club I know of nearby.
